Note: As her husband's line of descent is speculative it is interesting to note that a Harris cousin assisted with the estate of a Henry Pearson (or Henry Person?) of Isle of Wight or Southampton Co., VA in 1754.

Her grandfather, William Mahoney, gave her a slave in his will (1795). She received a portion of her father's estate (1808).

Notes for John J. 'Jack' Pearson:

A tentative link to his presumed father, Benjamin Person or Benjamin Pearson, is based on the county (Brunswick) being cited in descendants records, and the Pearson / Person names living adjacent and intermarrying of North Carolina and Mississippi.

Notes for Mary Jane Wynne:

"My mother, a young lady, and Dr. Pearson's wife whom we knew as "Aunt Louisiana", came to visit the Ben Pearsons in November '58. It took a week to make the trip since the train came only as far as New Orleans, and the rest of the trip was by boat. As the Pearsons were not expecting them, when the travelers landed at Bayou Pierre late one night, they found transportation in a broken down hack, drawn by two horses of bony sides, the owner being in keeping with his carriage. They reached the Pearsons about midnight. In the meantime, Dr. George E. Harris, having finished his internship at Bellvue in New York City, and two other young men, Jim Nolan and George Talbot, excited by Horace Greeley's advice, had come to DeSoto to buy land. Dr. Harris found board at Mrs. Benson's and proceeded to practice medicine. He and my mother met and fell in love, and when she returned to Yazoo in April '59 they were engaged.

"After she had told him all sorts of yarns about her people living in log cabins daubed with red dirt, he couldn't believe he was in the right place when he came to a beautiful home, with white pickets tipped with black around the yard. They were married October 6, 1859, and the editor who published the marriage, wound it up: "Two souls with but a single thought, Two hearts that beat as one." They went back to Washington, Ga. to settle up the business there, sell the plantation and come back to DeSoto in covered wagons and a buggy, because all the negroes were to be brought here. They arrived in February 1860. After the war had taken everything, niggers and all, my daddy had to move to a more thickly settled area to make a living with his profession, so, they moved to St. Landry Parish in February 1867. As she wanted so much to get back to Yazoo, they moved there, I think in 1869, and my father's obituary tells the rest. We were brought up in Yazoo, not far from Vaughn on the I. C. Railroad." Corrinth Miss. June 16/61

Dear Father

It is with pleasure that I seat my self at the foot of this oak this sabbath morning to address you a few lines to let you hear from me. My health is very good at present. The health of our company is tolerably good with the exception of three or four cases. We have one case of measles in camp. Bage Chaster has them and there is also another case in the Coffeeville company. Tom Allen has them. He in nearly well. The measles broke out on Chaster day before yesterday. Cousin Tim has been poorly for a day or so. He has a very bad cold and it has settled on his bowels. He suffered very much from it last night though it was owing to his imprudence as he was feverish and drank too much ice water and limon ade. He is lying up this morning. Though he is not sick much. only feels week and bad. John stands it pretty well. he has not been sick at all. he often speaks of you and says that he will never forget you for your kindness and good advice that you have given him. He was very proud of his present and returns his thanks to you for it. he will write to you in a few days he says. I have nothing interesting to write you. We had one death in our regiment last Wednesday. his death was produced from the quinzy. We also had a very fine rain a few days since and it was needed very much as it had become ..... dusty. Pa your lambs will never be forgotten those that you sent me last week by Soap and Cousin Dick. by all the Water Valley boys. they speak of them very often. they come in a very good time as we had been eating bacon until we really wanted a little fresh meat. it was devoured as soon as I got it or in a few minutes afterwards. By all your friends. They all say that you are made out of the right kind of material. There has been about fifty of our boys around me since I commenced this letter they all requested me to present their love and best wishes to you. I received a letter from Sister Morning and two boxes of eatables, they contained apples, dosen? ears, pickles, plums, cakes ... (missing word). Pa she is also made out the rights kind of material. Her boxes come in very good time as I began to want a change. She sent them up by Cal Hunt as he got a furlow to go down home last week. I thought maby I would come down the last of this week. but they say a single man don’t get off. and a married man has to put up a mighty pretty plea before he can get off. you must come up soon and see us. I don’t know when we will leave here. we haven’t got any news yet on that point or what affect. Pa if you have not sent my letter and Grand Ma Pearson’s Degaretype (daguerreotype) to Uncle Bin ... must send it immediately as I want him to get them. My love to Grand Ma Bailey, Grand Ma Pearson and Aunt Eve. Tell them to write to me I think of them daily and wish that I could be with them. my love to all enquiring friends. write soon to your loving son. (Adieu) R.V. Pearson.

James W. Nolan was reared to a knowledge farm life by his father, James Nolan, and like the majority of farmers' boys he has followed in his ancestor's footsteps, and is now one of the leading agriculturists of this parish. He is a native of Wilkes County, Ga., where he was born in 1837, and until eighteen years of age, at which time the father died, he remained under the shelter of the paternal roof, his mother, whose maiden name was Almedia Florence, having died when he was twelve years old. The father was born in Virginia in 1780, being a son of George Nolan, who was of English descent, a Revolutionary soldier, and died in his native State of Virginia. The mother was born in Lincoln County, Ga., in which State her father, Thomas Florence, was born and spent his life, being a tiller of the Soil. James W. Nolan was the first of three sons and three daughters, and received a good education in his youth at Washington, Ga., also spending one term in the University of Virginia at Charlotteville. In 1859 he came to De Soto Parish, La., and farmed until the opening of the war. He was married in 1861 to Miss Mary Fannie, daughter of Benjamin W. and Julia Pearson, the former a native of Raleigh, N. C., and the latter of Camden, Ala., their marriage taking place in Montgomery, of the latter State. They came to De Soto Parish in 1840, the father dying in 1876, aged about seventy-two, and the mother still living, at the age of seventy-three years, a worthy member of the Methodist Church. Mrs. Nolan was born at Fort Jessup, Sabine Parish, La., in 1840, and is the third of eleven children, and the mother of thirteen children, ten sons and two daughters liv ing. Mr. Nolan served for a short time in the Confederate army in Shelly's battalion, which was afterward merged into the Crescent Regiment, and held the rank of sergeant. After the war he spent four years as a merchant of Mansfield, but has since devoted his attention to farming, being the owner of about 1,800 acres, with 600 cleared. He is also operating a saw, grist-mill and cotton-gin, in all of which enterprises he is doing well.

He and his wife have been members in good standing of the Methodist Church for a long time, and for many years he has been a member of the A.F. & A. M.

"The year was 1864 ad nine year old Benjamin Franklin Myrick was awakened by loud voices in the yard. They had come -- The Yankees.

Being too young to understand what it was all about I had an uneasy feeling all day as I watched the servants take hams from the smoke house and bury them. Some took the cows and horses to the swamp to hide them. Now I knew why fear had been on everyone's face. The soldiers had built a fire in the yard. They were roasting hams, ducks and chickens. The smell of burning feathers and meat cooking at midnight was frightening.

"Angry voices came nearer; my bedroom door opened. I was shaking like a leaf. The soldiers laid their guns on my bed. Mother was pleading with the soldiers, much talk ensued, the soldiers were then polite. After eating and a few hours of rest they moved on."
