Notes for William Hawkins:

He landed in Norfolk Co., but by 1637 he had bought land and had a plantation along the New Poquoson River near James Cittie. He bought land adjoining Peter Rigsby's plantation. Uncertain what records, if any, identified him to an earlier researcher as a son of William Hawkins and Mary Halse.

First to my son in law John Wright husband of daughter Sarah one heifer. John is son of Edward Wright. Number two, a Silver Flaagon for the use of all the inhabitants of York Parish in the Church. [Note: I have not seen this will and am told that Millicent may not be mentioned - and that Argyle may be a step-son, not a son-in-law, as the term would also be used.]

Son John stayed in York Co. and was the father of Edward Hawkins and John Hawkins who died 1717 York Co. and left a will.

Most records were destroyed and some of the connections to Michael Hawkins are speculative.

William had a son Thomas. Court Records Bk. 2, p. 302: A Court for York Co., Va. 30 Nov. 1647, 11/12/1647 :"Whereas a certeyne dwelling house and orchard where William Hawkins now liveth fell into the plantation of Peeter Rigby by survey late made upon the severall lands of the said Wm Hawkins and Peeter Rigby". Rigby now gives this land to Thomas Hawkins, son of Wm. Hawkins. Peeter Rigby had bought 200 acres of glebe land a few months before and the survey revealed that William Hawkins had built on a part of that land. I assume that the son Thomas was living in the house involved, it having been given to him by his father so Peeter gave the house and orchard to Thomas.

[Note: Another Thomas Hawkins, likely of Co. Kent, England, resided adjacent Col. Thomas Lucas and married his daughter, Mary Lucas. Info connecting this man with that one should be considered speculative.]

The will was proved 26 March 1688 by Ralph Walker and John Sommers. Wife Ailes to "enjoy the plantation that I now live on during her naturall life and after her decease to my eldest son James Blackstone with the rest of my divident". Wife Ailes to care for my fower sons "til they come of age of one and twenty yeares", if she remarries then eldest sons James and William to take their two younger brothers Argoll and Thomas Blackston care until age one and twenty. The majority of the will deals with the distribution of personal property to the four sons and York Parish. A Majr. Goodin is the only non family member mentioned. The executrix of the will was to be wife Alice Blackstone.

"I do not know if Argoll married the daughter of William Hawkins and wife Sarah or if Argoll is the step-son of William. It seems strange that the other children you mention got nothing or very little. From other records by Dorman, it appears that the older Argyle's children James, William, Argoll, and Thomas were born in the 1660's and 1670's. My guess is that William married Argoll's mother and the estate was to be passed on to Argoll after Sarah's demise.

Another (earlier) Matthew Hawkins resided near the New Poquoson River. On April 15, 1646 he witnessed an agreement between John Merryman and John Griggs. In 1646, Derrick Derrickson received three hogshead of tobacco from Mathew Hawkins. The exact relationship to the earlier Hawkins of York is not known.

"His father was probably the John Hawkins who in 1731 owned land adjacent to George Payne in Goochland County on the Wild Boar Branch of Licking Hole Creek. John Womack lived nearby and his deed was witnessed by William Eaton. The Cook family lived nearby also." [This shows the speculative nature of this placement of Michael.]

"On April 11, 1726, Michael and Edward "Hawkings" witnessed a deed transferring 330 acres of land in Prince Georges County. Afterwards Edward "Hawkings", probably a brother of Michael, purchased and had surveyed three hundred acres on the southside of Stony Creek in Prince Georges County (now Dinwiddie County). Modern maps show this area lying just southeast of the City of Dinwiddie. The area is still designated as Hawkins Run of Stony Creek. Michael's name first appears on the list of titheables in Lunenburg County, Virginia, in 1748, thereby confirming that he had moved west from Dinwiddie. Michael last appears on the titheables list in 1752 (his name misspelled Mitchall). However, in 1757, Michael bought 200 acres of land in Lunenburg County from his son John Hawkins. In May 1758, Michael (Michell) Hawkins, along with many other citizens, was ordered to clear and keep in repair a county road surveyed by John Hawkins. In 1761, Michael Hawkins was the named defendant in an action brought by Richard Hanson. The suit was dismissed. Michael apparently died shortly thereafter."

Thomas Hawkins was a vestryman of Cumberland Parish from 1754-1758. He was a deputy Sheriff under Lyddall Bacon from 1757 to 1759, in which year he died.

Thomas Hawkins falls ill and makes his will on November 13, 1758. In doing so he names John Clark as a beneficiary of 200 acres on Sandy Creek. There is a Sandy Creek in Pittsylvania County. Halifax County separated from Lunenburg County in 1752 and Pittsylvania County separated form Halifax Co.June 1, 1767. It appears then that the 200 acre tract of land mentioned in the will, was in Halifax Co. in 1758.

And on the motion of said executrix and executor, certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate of the will, whereupon they, together with Joseph Williams, Joseph Freeman, William Caldwell, Samuel Young, and James Easter, their securities, entered into [bond].

2. John Clark recently sold some land to Thomas Hawkins that was located on the north side of Butchers Creek.

Mary Howard married 1st Thomas Hawkins of Lunenburg Co., VA. She and John Potter, her 2nd husband, were executors of Thomas Hawkins' estate.

She was mentioned in the will of her uncle, Francis Howard.

Joshua Hawkins and Sarah lived near a branch of the Reedy Creek in Lunenburg Co., VA where Joshua purchased 200 acres of land on 16 Aug 1756. This family lived on their Virginia plantation a little less than six years. On 6 Jul 1762 they sold the land to Richard Hanson for L50, Sarah giving up her right to dower. Witnesses to this sale were John Jenings, John Manatray and Edward Mosesley.

DEATH ENDS LIFE OF WORTHY WOMAN

Dec.30.- The remains of MR.S C.J. HAWKINS, aged 89, and the oldest resident of Hendersonville, who died early Thursday morning at her home were interred at Oakdale cem. this morning, conducted by REV. K.W. CAWTHON at the First Bapt. church.

MRS. HAWKINS was a native of Greenville, S.C. She and her husband came to the city 65 years ago, and shortly ran the Hawkins House, then the leading hotel in the village.

MRS. HAWKINS was the mother of nine children, five of whom are living; MRS. GUDGER, wife of congressman, J.M. GUDGER of Asheville, MRS. L.M. DODAMEAD of this city, MRS. J.H. HOLMES and MRS. FRED E. HODGES of Seattle, Wash., a son, GEORGE HAWKINS of VICTORIA, B.
