was born Bef. 1605 in poss. of Kent, England. Notes for <Unknown> Hawkins: Could this be Ralph Hawkins or his son? Elizabeth Underwood names her "cousen
Maj. Thomas Hawkins"; and since her husband's mother was the daughter of Ralph
Hawkins, this relationship is the most likely and only obvious one, though not
proven. Thomas Hawkins of Kent and Old Rappahannock is not confirmed to be the
brother of Richard Hawkins of Westmoreland or Old Rappahannock, but is certainly
the brother-in-law of William Moseley. A grandson of this man was definitely a
brother-in-law of a William Moseley (am I confusing these generations?) The following Thomas Hawkins is also in this file: Thomas Hawkins Will - 2 October 1656 1. explorer. He and German immigrant John Lederer were among the first settlers to
lead an expedition to the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains in 1670. "Colonel Catlett was killed by the Indians while defending the fort at Port
Royal in 1670, Port Royal is on the Rappahannock river, in Caroline county
opposite Port Conway." (Stubbs, pg. 15) Stubbs: "...by his will he left two daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah Catlett,
600 acres of land in Rappahannock County, who married brothers, Francis and
Robert Taliaferro....Order Book 1686-1692 p. 25." John Catlett emigrated from Sitingbourne , England to Virginia. The Virginia
Land Books have an entry whereby on May 23, 1650, John Catlett and Ralph Rowzie
were granted 400 acres on south side of the Rappahannock river for headrights.
John was also granted 450 acres called "Green Hill" on the south side of the
Rappahannock river, between the Golden Vale and Cedar Creek. This was his home
place and long continued in his family. http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/karon_bosze/earljohn.htm Notes for Elizabeth Underwood: She married 1st Dr. James Taylor, 2nd Francis Slaughter, 3rd Col. John

Lucas, Sr. and John Dawson. Recorded Old Rappahannock, 7 May 1673. As Sarah Hawkins was Catlett's mother, and Ralph Hawkins his grandfather,

descendant. Children of John Catlett and <Daughter> Lucas are: + 19 i. Nicholas5 Catlett, born Abt. 1643 in

Co., VA. He married (1) Mary Lucas Abt. 1655, daughter of Thomas Lucas
and <Unknown>. She was born Aft. 1640, and died Bet. 1664 - 1665 in Old
Rappahannock Co., VA. He married (2) Frances Bloomfield Aft. 1670. She
died 09 Aug 1676. Notes for Maj. Thomas Hawkins: Thomas Hawkins, Gentleman, Burgess, Captain of Militia, Justice of the
Rappahannock Court, was a leader in the county and owner of thousands of acres
of land along the river valley. He was close to the Thomas Page family and
probated Page's will. He was related to Col. Moore Fauntleroy, the Booth and
Rowzee families. Holland D. Warren, PhD in "Warrens and Related Families of
North Carolina and Virginia" 1990 A Ralph Hawkins, father of Sarah Hawkins who married Lodowick Lewis Rozee and
John Catlett, is a candidate for grandfather, as these families appear to be
related and appear to have located in Rappahannock Co., VA at about the same
time; Thomas Hawkins is called "cousin" to John Catlett's widow. 1 Jul 1653 Thomas Hawkins was granted 340 mb on the North side of the
Rappahannock River on Pepetick Crerek. This grant was for the transportation of
7 persons into the colony and was signed by Richard Bennett, Governor at James
City. Rappahannock Co. Records: 10 Mar 1665: The mark of the Hoggs and Cattle of

Rappahannock 1676-1679. He died before finishing his term. 6 Oct 1675 Thomas Hawkins of Rappahannock obtained a grant of 2,611 acres on
the south side of the Rappahannock. This grant included 1,677 acres and 934
acres that were formerly the two grants of Mr. Thomas Lucas Sr. Thomas Hawkins
escheated this Lucas land as Thomas Lucas Sr. and Thomas Lucas Jr. were
deceased, without issue. Hawkins prepared his will in Feb. 1676; all his land went to his sons, Thomas
Hawkins, Jr. and John in equal shares; the remainder of the sestate was to be
equally divided between his "now-wife" Frances and the rest of his children
living at his death. ".. my former wife's diamond ring and peraly neacklace to my daughter

Elizabeth dau. Hannah wife Frances my brother Samuel Bloomfield Thomas Hawkins is mentioned as "my loving friend Thomas Hawkins" in the will
of Lawrence Washington, Sept., 1676 ("Richmond Dispatch," July 16, 1877). "Captain Thomas Hawkins," as he is described in the records, was a Justice of
Old Rappahannock County, in 1670. The following information is about another Thomas Hawkins, said to be in the
previous generation and who died 1640 in York Co., VA: [This man is identified as a half-brother of William Hawkins in some
listings.] Thomas Hawkins, a son of the Thomas Hawkins of James City, 1623, acquired 600
acres of land in Charles River County on November 21, 1635 from Captain John
Cheeseman. On August 14, 1639, he received 330 acres, southeast of the New
Poquoson River and 150 more acres called "The Nut Tree Neck." This land was
obtained for the sponsorship of six persons by the elder Thomas Hawkins. The New
Poquoson River is located in southern York County; the land owned by Thomas
Hawkins began at Hawkins Point and ran along Hawkins Creek to the creek which
separated the Hawkins land from that of Captain Cheeseman. Notes for Mary Lucas: Her father's will refers to his grand daughter, Mary Hawkins, and his
son-in-law, Thomas Hawkins. Notes for Frances Bloomfield: Thomas Hawkins' second wife Frances married Samuel Blomfield or Samuel
Bloomfield after Thomas' death. Frances and Samuel were executors of Thomas'

Aft. 1709. Notes for John Hawkins: "John was probably the second son as his brother Thomas was left their
father's estate. This son Thomas died circa 1696. Deeds after this date refer to
John as the only son of Thomas Hawkins, Sr. John had married Elizabeth moseley
by 1698 when they sold land together in Essex. In 1699 John Hawkins deeds land
to his brother-in-law Robert Moseley. in 1709 he deeds land to his other
brother-in-law Robert Moseley. The 1709 will of Elizabeth moseley, wife of
Benjamin Moseley, mentions her loving brothers (ie in-laws) Edward Moseley and
John Hawkins. John Hawkins was a Captain in the Virginia Militia as substantiated by this
decree: "For the protection of frontiersmen the Assembly convened in March 1676
to declare war on the savage Indians. Commissioners were appointed to use Indian
scouts, received hostages, and reward Indians for services rendered. Among the
commissioners appointed was Capt. John Hawkins of Rappahannock." A deed of 10 Oct 1699 reads in part: "John Hawkins of Sittenbourn Parish,
only sonne and heir of Thomas Hawkins, late of the same Parish deceased, sells
one hundred and fifty acres to Bartholomew Vawter." Elizabeth, wife of John,
relinquished her dower rights to this land on 10 April 1700. The deed asserts
this land was part of a trace granted by patent on 16 Dec 1663 to Mr. Thomas
Lucas. It was escheated to Thomas Hawkins by patent 6 Oct 1675. John was a prosperous planter and active in colonial affairs. He served in
the House of Burgess and also served a term as sheriff of Essex County. The
following case is typical of many suits he brought to court. His payment for
winning these cases was usually five hundred pots or pts. (lbs.) of tobacco. It
is interesting to note that his in-law, Thomas Covington, served on the jury
that ruled in John's favor. Essex Court 1699: "John Hawkins complaining against Thomas Thorpe for
concealing a woman servant tithable contrary to law and declining for five
hundred pts (i.e. Poinds) of tobacco as discoverer of ye said offence. The
defendant pleaded not guilty wherefore ye matter for tithable was referred to a
jury." Verdict "We of ye jury find for ye plaintiff agent against ye defendant
for ye said five hundred pts. of tobacco to be paid with cost of suit." In a deed of 10 July 1703 John Hawkins of Sittenburgh Parish sells land to
Richard Riley and the deed refers to Elizabeth Hawkins, wife of John Hawkins.
Richard gives power of attorney to Benjamin Moseley to acknowledge the deed for
her. No further record is found of Elizabeth and John together. John subsequently married Grace, the relice of Samuel Stallard as attested to
by a court order dated 1721 that states: "Grace Stallard relicet of Samuel
Stallard failing to appear and answer the petition of Richard matthews heir at
law of Robert Matthews, decd. The said Grace being now married to John Hawkins."
John's children were all from his first marriage to Elizabeth. After John's
death in 1726 there was quite a dispute over his property between his children
and his widow. His relict Grace then married John Morgan. John Hawkins mentions in this will sons Thomas Hawkins and William Hawkins,
and daughters Mary Hawkins, Elizabeth Renolds and wife Grace. John Hawkins
bequeathed 700 acres of land to son Thomas Hawkins, whose name occurs frequently
in the Order Books of Essex County, and who on one occasion, engaged Thomas Hord
as his attorney in a suit. John Hawkins was a member of the House of Burgesses from Essex County,
October 25, 1710 (See "Virginia Magazine," Vol. XVIII, page 192). John Hawkins
was son of Thomas Hawkins whose will was dated February 8, 1675, and proved in
Old Rappahannock County (which then included Essex County), January 20, 1677. The Hord Family of Virginia Notes for Grace <Widow> Stallard: Grace is mentioned in John's will, but her surname is not proven. She was the
relict of Samuel Stallard and married 3rd John Morgan. Children of John Hawkins and Elizabeth Moseley are: + 74 i. Thomas6 Hawkins, born Abt. 1704 in St.

Stafford County, in the 61st year of her age. She was the mother of thirteen
children, all of them bred up and settled out in that regular decent manner as
to the patterns of sobriety, industry, and good behaviour to all around them;
these, with their children, amount in the number of 54. And what is very
remarkable, that amisdt all the cares, troubles and difficulties, of so
laborious a task, and the additonal misfortune of her husband being blind for
near twenty years, she lived with him in so constant a tenor of conjugal
affection, that not a harsh word or untoward expression ever passed between
them; such are the comforts of the matrimonial state when rightly conducted. Her
loss is much deplored by her acquaintances and affectionate children. but it is
and must be peculiarly distressing to her surviving husband, who has now no one
left to live with him to cheer the melancholy residue of his days of darkness".

about one year old when his father moved to Kentucky, where he
first settled at Bryans Station, and afterward near Georgetown,
where he lived until after 1805, and then moved to Boone County. "John Hawkins was a friend of Colonel Richard M. Johnson (of
Tecumseh fame), who lived near Great Crossing. Colonel Johnson
wanted him to study law in his office, but my father had other
views for his future. He belonged as a private to Captain James
Ellis' Company, 16th Kentucky Militia, in the War of 1812, from
September 10th, 1814 to March 9th, 1815, when he was discharged
at Malden, now Amherstburg, Canada, eighteen miles below
Detroit. He was paid in full for his services and allowed $5.06
for travel pay for 330 miles to his home in Boone County, --
which in those days was certainly a beggarly allowance. The
Government is more generous to the soldier in modern days. "It seems, according to family tradition, that he remained at
Detroit some time after his discharge, engaged in arranging the
accounts of the paymaster, and there was such delay in reaching
his home, so long after he was expected, that his family gave
him up for dead, and when he one day made his appearance,
unannounced, in the door-yard of his home, my Aunt Margaret, who
was the first to see him, fell down in a swoon." 515 ii. Miriam Waller, born 01 May 1787; died 01 Oct 1819.
