James Cobb". James was to be paid his portion of his father's estate "as soon as
he shall arrive at age of 21". The son-in-law mentioned was actually his step-son. Notes for Rebecca <Unknown>: Her maiden name is unknown but she married first a Darnell, then James
Emerson and then James Cobb and lastly John Hawkins. Her daughter by James
Emerson, Rebecca Emerson, married John Hawkins' son by a previous marriage.

MO. Notes for Augustus Hawkins: Augustus Hawkins is a son of John Hawkins, a Revolutionary
soldier, who was a native of Buncombe County, N. C., and when
about sixteen years of age entered the army as a substitute
under Gen. Washington, in which capacity he served two years,
and then re-enlisted as his own representative, leaving the
priceless inheritance to his children of being one of the
purchasers of the freedom of this "glorious land." He located in
Washington County, Mo., about 1790. He married Rebecca Kester;
and to them were born the following children, viz.: Ruth,
Elizabeth, Susan, Joseph, John, Austin H., Sophia, William,
James, Nancy and Augustus. The mother died in 1830, and the father in 1840. Augustus,
the youngest of the family, was born May 31, 1818; he was reared
in Washington Co., in which county he has followed the
occupation of farming all his life, owning a good farm of 375
acres. He married Miss Elizabeth Pinson in 1841; she was born in
Washington County in 1820. To their union were born thirteen
children, of whom nine are living, viz.: Rebecca (now Mrs.
Solomon B. Strong), Jane (the wife of F. E. McGready), Newton,
Emily, Milton, Margaret (now Mrs. Z. F. Higginbotham), Iris,
Mary (wife of Francis Long), and Elsine. Although a Union man
Mr. Hawkins suffered severly during the war by those at whose
hands he had a right to better treatment. As one of the oldest
settlers and most enterprising farmers of Washington County, he
commands the respect and esteem of a host of friends and
acquaintances. 65. Benjamin5 Hawkins (Augustin4, Joseph3,
John2, <Unknown>1) was born Bet. 1762 - 1772, and died
Bet. 11 - 21 Feb 1827 in Buncombe Co., NC. He married (1) Hannah Chambers
Abt. 1790, daughter of James Chambers and Abigail <Unknown>. She was born 1769,
and died 15 Oct 1821 in Buncombe Co., NC. He married (2) Mary Hawkins
1806. Notes for Benjamin Hawkins: May be the son of William Hawkins, d 1793 in Bedford Co., VA, and wife Mary
Littleberry. Benjamin Hawkins was one of the early prominent settlers in Buncombe County.
His home was called Atler Hall, and was located on the present Biltmore Estate,
and he was sent by the North Carolina General Assembly to see that a courthouse
was built for the new County of Buncombe. This Bible indicates that Benjamin was born in 1762 and "Hanah his wife" was
born in 1769. All the 13 children are listed and there is no indication that
Benjamin had 2 wives. Each child is listed with complete birthdates and all but
one have complete death dates. The one whose death date does not appear is
Elizabeth who died in 1901 and outlived all her siblings. Every document we have located indicates that Benjamin was known by only one
given name as was Hannah, and that the name Benjamin Franklin Hawkins was given
to their youngest son born in 1815 when Benjamin Franklin had achieved
recognition for his activities prior to, during and following the Rev. War
period. You may note that B.F.'s next oldest brother born 1812 was given the
name of Joseph Washington Hawkins also recognizing the contributions of George
Washington. Prior to those two children the only names listed in the family
Bible were single given names. I do believe that as fashion began to dictate it
that some of the children (daughters especially) may have taken second names.
