Descendants of John Hawkins
Generation No. 1
1. John1 Hawkins was born Bef. 1649 in poss. Slapton, Devonshire, England, and died Aft. 1697. He married Mary Dewe, daughter of Edward Dewe.
Notes for John Hawkins:
This man is often said to descend from Sir John Hawkins, and is often included in families as one of the parents of the immigrants to the New World. Burke's Peerages of England includes some of the descendants shown.
Thanks to Betty Haley, Feb 1999 for this:
"See Zella Armstrong's "Notable Southern Families," Vol IV, p 142 in which she cited research of Irene Ewing Morrow. Morrow stated there were three brothers, Joseph, Benjamin and Samuel who arrived from Eng 1658 and settled in Gloucester and Matthew Counties, Va (then part of Md). Brother John followed 1691 and settled Ma. Fifth (no name) came following year and died not long afterwards.
My own research indicates these were sons of John H and Mary (Dewe) Hawkins:
1. William, b 1673, Eng; m Margaret ?? in Essex Co, Va. 2. Joseph , d 1769. 3. John H, Jr, b abt 1680, Slapton, Devonshire, d 1764, St George's Parish, Spotsylvania Co, Va; m [1] ?? Johnson and [2] Mary Long. 4. Philemon the first, b 1695, Slapton, Devonshire, d 1725, Spotsylvania Co, Va; m Ann Eleanor Howard, 1714, Devonshire. 5. Nicholas; d 1756." (end of Betty's quote)
However:
John Hawkins who married Mary Dewe is not the John Hawkins who was christened 12 Sep 1643 at Slapton, who died in 1670. His sister handled his will, and he likely did not have children.
Most families in Virginia claiming to descend from Sir John Hawkins cite this:
Page 6 of John Henry Hawkins and His Kin by Duane Gage - at DAR Library in Wash. DC
"John Hawkyns (1643-????), son of John and Hester Hawkyns, was the only male in his family who lived long enough to produce a family. court records and church records from this era are scarce and, in many cases, illegible.
We can determine that this particular descendant married Mary Dewe, d/o Edward Dewe of Islip, Oxfordshire, and they had fourteen children born between 1671 and 1698. In 1682 John and Mary Dewe Hawkyns settled at Great Milton, Oxfordshire. The date of death for this John Hawkyns is not known. "It is not likely that the family could afford to provide all fourteen children a higher education. Consequently, some of the younger sons were destined to seek their fortunes on their own. John Hawkyns, a younger son of John and Mary Dewe Hawkyns, born about 1680, emigrated to the colony of Virginia about 1705 and settled in St. Anne's Parish..... In 1715 another Hawkins brother, Philemon (1690-1725) emigrated to America and settled near his kinsman. Philemon was the first of our direct ancestors to reach America. (Mayes, Genealogical Notes, D157; Gen. John Parker Hawkins, Hawkins Family and connections; 1913, p. 70)"

*In her book, Mary Hawkins mentions probate of John’s will, and a listing of his property, which was in his room, in his father’s house. John would only have been 27 years old, and given that he lived in a room in his father’s house, and his sister was the executer of his will, it seems likely that he never married. Question: was the John who married Mary Dewe born 21 Sep 1643? Or is the marriage record all that has been found?
Note: Thomas Edward Hawkins, of England, found where John Hawkins married Agnes Phillips in 1663 at Margate. This would seem more likely than Oxfordshire. It’s closer to Slapton, and there are many Heale names in the parrish register. The problem is, this John had children born after 1670, when John, the son of John esq. Died. It's the same problem as the John that married Mary Dewe.
"A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland" [John Burke, London, 1834-1838, reprinted Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore,Volume II, page 215] contains a family sketch of John Hawkins and Mary Dewe, which does not include a son named Philemon.
They had a son John, who married Miss Wainwright, and a dau Catherine, who married Elias Taunton. A biography of William Hawkins [1678-1748] in "The Dictionary of National Biography" Volume IX, page 230 [publication data missing] identifies him as the son of John and Mary Dewe Hawkins. There is
no indication that any of this family migrated to America.
