Cavaliers and Pioneers (1666-1695) by Nell Marion Nugent gives the following: Thomas Harrell, 150 acres in Nanzemond at head of Parkers's Creek, 23 April 1681, p. 89, part of 250 acs granted Silvester Baker 1 April 1658, renewed in 1662, and now in possession of the afsd Thomas as heire of his father, Thomas Harrell, who purchased from sd Baker.

Thomas may have been a brother to the "first" John Harrell, listed as an immigrant.

John Harrell, the immigrant was a headright of John Jenkins in Northampton Co., Va. used in 1655. (He had perhaps been in Virginia many years at that time). This same John Harrell was later sponsored by George Bryer and Richard Lawrence, several years later, in Rappahannock County. (Nugent, Cav. & Pioneers, pp. 331-472)

Ava Gardner is a Harrell descendant.

There is one indication that the father of one or more of these men was Simon Harrell.

On January 13, 1745, Richard Harrell Sr., a planter from Perquimans County sold 210 acres in Perquimans County to his son-in-law, James Scott.[93] Then on November 16, 1747, Richard Harrell Sr. of Nansemond County bought 190 acres on Cashy Swamp, adjacent to the Roads Plantation at Wattom Swamp. John and Francis Harrell were witnesses. This located Richard among the other Harrells, just above the Roanoke River in southern Bertie County.

"Starting in 1753, Richard began to sell parts of a 1721 land grant he had received. He sold part to Samuel Andrews on June 5, 1753. It "…being part of a Patent bearing date March 1, 1721. The land was located in the low grounds of the River adjacent to Marmaduke Norfleet at Upper Black Pond. A witness was John Harrell. Then on November 30, 1753, Richard Harrell sold 160 acres to John Rutland of Northampton County. It was formerly part of a patent granted to Samuel Andrews. Again, on May 3, 1755, Richard sold 110 acres to James Brown. It too was part of a patent of March 1, 1721, in the low ground of the river. This land was adjacent to Harrell, Marmaduke Norfleet to creek Pond at Black Pond on Thorney Branch at Ratlands. The Witnesses were John Harrell Jr., Arthur Brown, and James Brown Junior. In this deed, Richard was selling still more of the land from his original 1721 Patent.

"According to a March 15, 1755 deed some unrelated people were located "On Cashie Swamp adjacent to Richard Harrell on Popular Branch. This indicates Richard was still settled in the area at that time.[96] He also appeared on the Bertie County tax lists from 1757 through 1761..."

One Edward Harrell married Margaret Brumwell on April 20, 1707 in Middlesex, Virginia. He was referred to as Edward of Nansemond County, and was probably one of the original Harrell Brothers from that area of Virginia. On December 20, 1729, Edward Harrell of Nansemond County bought 350 acres from William Eason on the southeast side of Unerry [?] Swamp. The property was adjacent to Owen Daniels, James Smith, William Eason, Joseph Harrell, and Mr Parker. It was part of a patent granted to William Eason on Aug. 4, 1723, and of another patent granted Eason on May 1, 1721, and part of a deed of sale of James Parker dated July 12, 1722. The witnesses were John Harrell, John Harrell (probably John Jr./Sr. and Jr.) and Grace Harrell (John Jr./Sr.’s wife). This property was just above the Roanoke River, in the same area as Joseph, Abraham, and John Harrell.

Edward was still in Bertie County six years later, when on May 12, 1735, John Harrell, Joseph Harrill and Edward Harrill all witnessed a deed for a neighbor on the north side of the Roanoke River .

On December 24, 1737, Edward Harrell bought himself a Christmas present of 260 acres from James Brown. They were "in the fork between the South and Middle Branch of the Cashy at the neck where the two branches meet." The land was adjacent to Thomas Mann, and the witnesses on the deed were, John Harrell, Francis Parker. In addition, on March 5, 1749, Edward bought 190 acres more from the Earl of Granville for 3 shillings. This land was on the northeast side of the Cashy Swamp; adjacent to George Burnette the low cost of the land carried the usual conditions for settling the land and increasing the tax base in the area. For instance, Edward was required to "cultivate at rate of 3 acres for every 100 a…. within 21 years. Clear and cultivate the premises after the rate of 21 a. for every 100 a. erect a good dwelling house, stock cattle thereon at rate of 5 for every 100 a " Then on October 6, 1750, Edward bought more land—this purchase was for 330 acres from Samuel Page. The land was also in Cashey Swamp, adjacent to James Blunt, Samuel Page, and Ed. Harrell. The land had been formerly granted to Henry Rodes in 1723. The witnesses were Tom Page and John Harrell.

Bertie County tax lists indicate Edward had sons Henry, Joshua, and Thomas. Additional information about his family was provided in the will he wrote on August 17, 1752. In his will he identified his sons Henry, Jarusha [Joshua], and Thomas; his daughter, Mary Andrews; and his grandchildren, Jesse Harrell and Rebecca Sharpe. Edward’s son, Henry, was an executor along with his son-in-law, Henry Andrews.

[This John Harrell (~1690-1759) is said to have lived and died at Roonoroy Meadows in Bertie Co NC; his namesake son apparently predeceased him in December 1755 (see above). His sons Esias Harrell and Israel Hardy Harrell are also said to have predeceased him in or before November 1756. However, the Bertie Tax Lists of (October) 1759 and 1760 clearly indicate the presence of a John Harrell with 5 taxables [ie more senior/more prosperous than most] at Roonoroy Meadows (uneroyes, uneroy). This same person seems to persist through at least 1763.]

Notes for John Harrell:

There was only one taxable John Harrell in Hertford County from 1759 through 1784 (see Tables 8-11). Lt. John and the wealthy John Esquire on the Hertford tax lists must have been one and the same person.

In addition, John Harrell was the Sheriff of Hertford County from 1774 through 1777. He followed Nathan Harrell in that office -- Nathan was Sheriff of Hertford County 1771-1774. Nathan may have been one of John Esq.’s sons and, when Nathan became more involved in the movement for independence, his father was elected to the office of Sheriff. John was a generation older than Nathan, so it was Nathan who became more directly involved in the war for independence. John was a little too old to fight in the Revolutionary War. He was appointed to the Commission for Peace in 1731, so he must have been at least 21 years old at that time -- which means he was born before 1710, and he would have been at least 66 years old in 1776.

Thomas d 1763 Edgecombe was almost certainly a brother of Samuel d 1772 Bertie whose son was Kader/Cader d 1781 Bertie. They may well have been brothers of the Susanna Harrell who married Needham Bryant in 1732, as he witnessed their land transactions in 1743 (they bought property that was part of William Gray's original 1725 patent; Needham Bryant had purchased his plantation called Snowfield from William Gray in 1726). They may be brothers or half brothers of Edward d 1752 and Abraham d 1755, and John the Elder.

This Thomas Harrell was beside Thomas House on the 1757 Bertie Tax Register, which was the work of John Harrell Esq.

An inventory of his estate is dated August 10, 1781.

Cader wasn't listed on the Bertie tax list until 1761, when he appears beside his father, Samuel, on a list of males over 21. 1760 is incomplete, but Samuel appears without any other adult white males in his household in 1759 and in 1757. Cader may have turned 21 between 1759 and 1761.

Cader's son Samuel inherited land in Johnson Co, but there were also other Harrells at that location, on the N side of the Neuse River.

Lived in Bertie Co. NC and Johnston Co. NC, and moved to SC where he owned several thousand acres of land.

"Jacob ending up in South Carolina, but he didn't die in Charleston South Carolina as that simply where his will was filed and proved. The will dated in Jan 1798 and proved month later indicates he was from Saint Johns Parish (Berkeley Proprietary under the Lords) and futher indicates he owned a house and 204 acres on Washmasaw Swamp (as spelled in will but correct spell is Wassamassaw Swamp). Also There is no Jacob junior indicated in will and the following names listed in it: Levi Harrell (choice as exuctor and appointed such, also clearly noted as his son), Leacy Barfied, Selah Simmons (made her mark as a witness and her spouse Silas Simmons was second choice as exuctor but not apppoint such), Ann Timmons (on verify the original document versus the type transcripted public view of this will the T was crossed out and made to show S but the name is clealy Timmons not Simmons as folks had assumed since Selah and Silas Simmons named then Ann had to be a Simmons but Timmons also seen in this line and time with Harrells), Martha Curtis, Mary Black, Jasper Harrell (believe he was of age to hold land by 1785 as seen his name on land records with Jacob at this time), and Lewis Harrell (indicated to get 3 guenia only as he had already gotten lands from Jacob indicated also about 1785 in this area). He also left use of house and land to wife but so far have not found her name on any records (some have fixed her as Sarah Cole thus reason to question who she was wed to) and then it went to his grandson Levi Harrell (believe this son of Levi Harrell son of Jacob born in 1777 thus only 10 when Jacob died so his father would be his guardian by rights anyway).

"Also Believe that early on Levi Harrell son of Jacob sent his family out of South Carolina due to hostile area around Charleston South Carolina for Loyal Americans against the Crown and that his children ended up spending their early years with Uncle John of Wayne or Uncle Francis of Johnston and Aunt Sarah of Johnston.. Thus a close relation to them that lasted after the death of Jacob in 1787 their own grandfather. Also figure in cousins and can understand some confusion over who belong to who in the jungle when parents died for reason of War or just other natural causes. Levi Harrell son of Jacob is said by most to have wed twice but current finding support he only wed once and that Aunt Sarah Cole Harrell a widow by 1804 got mixed up in family history as a wife since they both died about the same time him 1806 (estate papers Barnwell District South Carolina filed by Levi Harrell, Esther Harrell, and Conrad Augley -- and have tracked her as a White holding land near Jacob and Levi holdings in South Carolina as early as 1773 and haven't found any Cole in the area around them... but find Cole up with Uncle Francis in Johnston or around it)."

"John ending up in Darlington South Carolina or what was original Craven Proprietary of the Carolinas (all lands along current North Carolina line with South Carolina basicly part of this Craven and it shouldn't be confused with the current active Craven County North Carolina which didn't come into active function until 1742 or after the Lords gave up rights to the Carolinas and only Lord Granville held out until his death in 1763 and he got rights to this area of northern North Carolina while rest of the Carolinas went to the Crown). Believe it his will dated 1793 indicating he from Wayne North Carolina, as it was recorded in Darlington District South Carolina in 1803. John Harrell shows early on land records not getting the land but believe he was a surveyor or possibly with militia escorting or assisting one in his duties. Will indicates he wed and Elizabeth and had three sons: Elisha, Spencer, John or Marion (add the of Marion because estate papers their dated in 1834 probably are his as Sarah Harrell and Asa Harrell filed them and Spencer Harrell was a witness on them and have details on who these may be)."

He was the Samuel Harrell, son of Thomas Harrell, and he was identified as such in a 1769 Chowan County deed.

The 1769 Chowan County deed that provides a link across three generations connects Samuel of Chowan to the area at a very early age -- it is a deed reflecting the sale of a piece of land by Samuel's son, Samuel Jr., to his brother, Isaac Harrell. When Samuel Jr. sold his land, he described it as follows: -- and is part of a larger tract granted to John More and by him sold to Thomas Harrell and by his will given to Samuel Harrell Father to Samuel Harrell Party to these present, and given by the Father’s Last Will to said Samuel. The Thomas Harrell referred to in the deed was probably one of the Thomas Harrells (Harrold) on the 1704 tax list for Nansemond County, Virginia -- probably the younger of the two. Thomas Harrell continued to buy land in the area; he did so in 1742, 1744, 1748, and perhaps 1754.

In addition to the land Samuel of Chowan inherited from his father, Thomas, he purchased 160 acres from Will Ward on November 29, 1737 -- this tract was located at the head of Oyster Tong Branch and was part of a tract of land granted to John Moore on November 17, 1700. Then in 1741, Samuel of Chowan purchased another 100 acres from Abraham Hill, and in 1747 he purchased another 100 acres in the same area from John Rice, who had purchased it from Abraham Hill. (Samuel of Chowan left part of the land purchased from John Moore to his son, Isaac Sr. in his 1761 will.)

Adam appeared early in the Hertford area with his 1735 purchase of 100 acres at the mouth of Horse Swamp. He could have been one of the original Harrell settlers out of Virginia, but the deed did not indicate any such connection. Adam apparently died in the area between 1758 and 1768--probably closer to 1758.

On October 13, 1785, Benjamin bought 12 1/2 acres from his brother, John Wimberly Harrell. This was John's rights to land they inherited from their then deceased brother, Whitmell Harrell. On that same day, October 13, 1785, Benjamin bought 50 acres from his brother, John Wimberly it was also land inherited from their father, Henry, in 1773.

Notes for Reuben Harrell:

Reuben was mentioned in a deed between his brothers, John and Benjamin, in 1785. It suggests he was at that time still on land he had inherited from his father. He was not located in Bertie or Gates County for the 1787 State census or the 1790 Federal census. Yet on June 30, 1809, Reuben's brother, Benjamin, named him as an executor in his will.

The Pitt Co., NC 1800 census indicates John, Michael and Reubin Harrell living in the county, with John living adjacent to Reuben. Reuben was over 45, as was his wife, and had two daughters and five slaves in the household.

Did he also have sons Zachariah Harrell and John Harrell, who moved to Anson Co., NC?

Pitt Co. NC deeds prove that Michael / Micajah Harrell of Pitt Co NC (he's enumerated there in 1800 and 1820) was a son of R. S. Simon Harrell of Edgecombe Co NC > Warren Co GA. Simon was a son of Thomas Harrell d Edgecombe 1763.

As a young single man, he came to America by booking passage on a saili ng vessel bound for Philadelphia. On the way over, the vessel was becalmed and was able to make headway only by use of the Gulf Stream. The vessel was thereby taken off its course and when it finally landed, Jonathan Cain found himself near where the city of Charleston, SC now stands.

Jonathan and Barbara were Quakers and when the Revolution broke out, declined to enter or assist. Tradition says that his neighbors, feeling that his convictions against war should be overcome, took to the method of trying him out on the subject. He was placed on a horse, his feet tied together with a rope under the belly of the horse and the horse turned loose without rope or bridle to guide it. Instead of running away and giving Jonathan a good shaking up as expected, the colt only wandered about. The neighbors became ashamed of their actions, caught the colt and released Jonathan. His oldest son, John, was about sixteen years old at the time and witnessed the episode. The son grew angry at the spectacle and told his father, Jonathan, that he was going to join the Continental Army. This he did in 1776 and served for seven years. On August 28, 1832 , three years before his death, John began to receive his pension from the United States Government for such services in the Continental Army. He and his immediate family lived in the northwest corner of Warren Co. on the Ogeechee River, where he had 486 acres and 8 slaves on the 1805 tax list. His will and/or estate records were apparently destroyed in the Warren Co. courthouse fire of 1853.

James Harrell was in Anson Co NC from abt 1796 to 1818 who appears beside Zachariah and Jedediah White on the 1800 census, at age 26-45, with a wife 16-25 and 2 sons and 2 daughters, all <10. He is believed to have married Agnes White ~1790. In 1810 James >45 was enumerated on the same page as Zachariah Harrell 26-45, who was still in Anson Co in 1820; both had large families in 1810. In 1817 (Anson Co NC DB S, p. 432) James and Isaac Harrell sold property on both sides of Lane's Creek adjoining Reuben Harrell to Solomon Marsh, father of the James Marsh who became the guardian of Simon Harrell's minor children in Sumter Co GA from 1857-1868. James Harrell then moved to Jasper Co GA, where he remarried in 1821 and died in 1823. (Samuel Harrell, second son of R. S. Simon Harrell, also moved to Jasper Co GA in 1818).

The will of James Harrell probated 6 Jan 1823 Jasper Co GA names grandsons Eli and James Atlass Harrell, "sons of Reuben Harrell;" son Isaac Harrell; daughters Elizabeth Mach [Marsh], SARAH JAMES, and Lydia Webb.

Solomon Marsh (son of Simon Marsh of the Litchfield, CT Marsh clan) was married to Agnes Little, whose father James Little bought property in Anson Co NC from Marsh Rushing in 1775. Michael Little of the Pitt Co NC Little family moved to Anson Co NC in 1808. His brother Pleasant Little was in Anson by 1816. They were enumerated side by side in Pitt Co NC in 1800, on microfilm page 289. Michael Harrell, whom all circumstantial evidence points to as the father of Simon Harrell (1804-1857) was on p. 288, while Reuben Harrell >45 and John Harrell 26-45 adjoined each other on p. 271. Michael Harrell's brother Simon Gray Harrell (aka Simon Jr) married Jane Rushing, eldest daughter of R. S. John "Flint River Jack" Rushing/Rushin, son of William Rushing of the Anson NC/Cheraws SC Rushings.

John is listed on the 1835 Pensioners' List as "Private, Cavalry and Infantry, North Carolina Militia; $45.00 annual allowance; $112.50 amount received July 22, 1833. Pension started at age 73."

The letter read that "John Harrwell was born in 1761 in Bertie County, North Carolina, and moved in 1763 to Anson County, North Carolina. While residing in said Anson County, he enlisted and served in the North Carolina troops, as follows: from July 1, 1778, three months in Captain Jonathan Jackson's company, Colonel Thomas Wade's regiment; from October 10, 1778, three months in Captain Patrick Bogan's company, Colonel Noah Rushing's cavalry regiment, and was in a skirmish at Bailey's Ridge; in 1780, three months in Captain Bogan's company; and again three months in Captain Bogan's company, no dates of this service given. He was allowed pension on his application executed October 10, 1832, then a resident of Anson County, North Carolina. His wife, Jane, died about 1828. Her maiden name is not given, nor are there any details on file as to their marriage. He died May 23, 1840, in Sumter County, Alabama. A daughter, Rosannah Rushing, was living in . . ." Charles Harrell in Shelby Co TN is the same Charles Harrell who was in Warren Co GA until around 1835, according to his children's birthplaces on the 1850 census.

In 1821 Charles Harrell and Benjamin Sandiford were co-defendants in a lawsuit brought in Warren Co GA Superior Court by Nicholas Williams, who won his case against them (on 5 Oct 1821 "jury finds for the plaintiff $1025 with interest & cash and also 8% for the frivolous appeal in the nature of damages"). In 1823, also in Superior Court, Charles Harrell and Benjamin Sandiford appealed a mutual debt. Charles Harrell was involved in several other lawsuits during the 1820's, all or nearly all decided in favor of his opponent; he had also been convicted of assault ~1818. Benjamin Sandiford was a prominent figure in Warren Co GA at the time, closely connected to the Harrells.

Moved from Pitt Co., NC by about 1814 to Warren Co., TN. His first son, Allen James, is shown to have been born in North Carolina in 1814. The county seat of Warren Co. is McMinnville, some 60 miles south-southeast of Nashville.

David and his small family shortly thereafter moved to Autauga Co., AL, just northwest of Montgomery and about sixty miles southeast of his brothers Frederick and Adam James, who were in Brent, near Centerville, Bibb, AL. Most of David and Sally's children were likely born in Autauga Co. from 1815 and 1833, according to census records. It is possible that some of these children were born in Tennessee.

In 1832-33 the family moved from Autauga Co., AL to Shelby Co., TN, the county of Memphis. In 1833 (or 1838) the family moved to that part of Yalobusha Co., MS which later became Grenada County, about 18 miles west of the town of Grenada, on Horse Pen Creek. Williamsville, MS is town listed in MS Memoirs, and Gore Springs is the closest town today. The area is served by Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, whish is the closest landmark.

Other James families from Pitt Co., patriarch John James b 1765, moved to Gibson Co., TN. Descendants named David Henry (b 1824 Pitt) and Frederick (b 1873) died in Crockett Co., TN. The county seat of Gibson is Trenton, and of Crockett is Humbolt. These counties are the "second county east of the River" midway from Mississippi to Kentucky.

Family records of David James and his brother Frederick were maintained by descendants of Frederick, which indicate that David and Sallie moved with Frederick to Tennessee, where they resided for several years. In TN, Frederick married. David & Sallie continued towards AL and eventually Grenada, MS.

Deed records from Pitt Co. have been indexed. A review of those indexes includes dozens of entries for James family members, some of whom are likely to be uncles / grandparents of these men. David and his brothers would not have been adults in Pitt Co., NC for any significant period of time.

This is from a narrative written by Bell Ross James dated 28 August 1937"

"David James was born 14 Aug 1790, a native of North Carolina, married Sarah (Sallie) Harrell. They moved to Alabama. in 1832 they moved to Shelby County, TN. They were not satisfied with this home, so in 1833 they moved to what is now Grenada County, MS. They camped in woods on Horse Pen Creek, eighteen miles [west] of Grenada.

"In this new country amid strange and unfamiliar scenes, Mr. James went to work to clear the forest and provide a home his family. The country at that time was almost a wilderness. Bears, deer, panthers, wild cats and wolves abounded.

"The nearest trading post or Post Office was at Grenada. The country was full of Indians. He experienced many hardships and deprivation, but gradually the family surmounted all difficulties, and at the time of his death 22 Oct 1864, he was quite a wealthy planter. His wife, who had been a faithful helpmate, died in 1870. Both had been members of the Baptist Church for years."

They moved to Sumter Co., AL, between about 1839, when their daughter, Elmira Jane, was a baby. Laban's son, Joe, was born in Sumter Co., AL, in 1850, and the family moved to Scott Co., Miss., shortly thereafter, where Laban purchased the old Gilmer Plantation and raised him family. There are Rushing descendants living on a portion of that land still.
