A Joseph Bozarth from Burlington, NJ married in Virginia and served in the Revolution with Sergn. James Forker:

Memo: 6 generations

Child of <Unknown> Fauquier is:

+ 2 i. William2 Fauquier, born Bef. 1743; died Abt. 1788.

Generation No. 2

2. William2 Fauquier (<Unknown>1) was born Bef. 1743, and died Abt. 1788. He married Rebekah May Abt. 25 Jul 1763 in Egg Harbor, Gloucester Co., NJ, daughter of George May. She was born Bef. 1748.

Notes for William Fauquier:

Could this be William Henry Fauquier, son of William Fauquier and Grace Warner of London? He was born about the right time, and a grandson shares the same name.

Or William Farquhar or William Forquer or William Faulkner (see Currituck Co., NC will of father-in-law George May dated 29 Sep 1784) George, William, Henry, James and John sons of William Farquhar by my daughter Rebecca.

Some land records and tax lists spell Faulkner and Fowler.

His marriage in Gloucester Co., NJ described as follows:

"FHLC 0888703; Vol. F:

#103; John FARQUOR (FORKER) and John DOE and Richard ROE (only "DOE" and "ROE" in the signatures - no given names or abbreviations)... [bound to]... William FRANKLIN, Governor... 500 pounds... 25 July 1763.

[w] Gab'l BLOND [consent] July 20, 1763, Eggharbour*... they are safe in granting of a liesanc for William FORKER to marry my daughter Rebecka MAY for it with my consent... [signed] George MAY" [Note: Gabriel Blond is noted in Burlington, NJ in 1739, where another Farquhar / Forker family is known to have resided during this period. Gabriel witnessed the will of Robert Sutton in Burlington, NJ in 1766]. Gabriel's name is often abbreviated Gab Blond and he witnessed a number of marriages in Burlington.

NJ tax lists:

One the same film that includes George May's land info: 1774 William Faulkner owned 5 acres improved (value 100 pounds), 5 uninmproved. In 1783 1 saw mill. William Sr., also 1783, Also 300 improved acres, 2 horses, 7 cattle 1 tavern. Son George had a sawmill in 1783.

A family Bible indicates this was the father of George Fauquier that married Flora Haymon, probably in Currituck Co., NC. WFT Disk 4, Tree 696 indicates that William May Fauquier, b 9 Jan 1773, was a child of William and Rebecca, and that William was the son of John Francis Fauquier from France & England. However, the death date of John Francis Fauquier (1728) likely pre-dates the birth date of this William. Interestingly, both men died in presumably the same year, though on different continents.

A Jane Forker or Jane Farquehr or Jane Forquer of Jessamine Co., KY married John McComsey. This family has not been linked to that Jane yet.

William was paid for being in the Service of Gideon Lamb during the Revolution, paid cash for repairing guns, listed as Wm. Focker. Recorded after 12 Nov 1775, he was paid one pound.

Notes for Rebekah May:

Also called Elizabeth May.

A family legend says she was "the daughter of an Irish sea captain in New Jersey" who in about 1780 moved with her husband William Fauquier to Currituck Co., NC.

Children of William Fauquier and Rebekah May are:

+ 3 i. George3 Fauquier, born 25 Aug 1765 in Poss. NJ; died 18 Oct 1832 in Union Co., KY.

4 ii. Henry Fauquier, born Abt. 1770 in Poss. NJ.

5 iii. John Fauquier, born Abt. 1770 in Poss. NJ.

+ 6 iv. James F. Fauquher, born Abt. 28 Jul 1772 in Poss. NJ; died 11 Jun 1841 in Vanderburgh Co., IN.

+ 7 v. William May Fauquier, born 09 Jan 1773 in Poss. NJ; died 1827 in Norfolk, VA.

Generation No. 3

3. George3 Fauquier (William2, <Unknown>1) was born 25 Aug 1765 in Poss. NJ, and died 18 Oct 1832 in Union Co., KY. He married Flora Hayman 07 Feb 1788 in Currituck Co., NC, daughter of Joseph Hayman and Flora Roberts. She was born Bet. 1763 - 23 May 1765 in poss. Currituck Co., NC, and died 05 Feb 1853.

Notes for George Fauquier:

In 1783 George Fauquier had a sawmill (tax list) in New Jersey.

This George Fauquier was likely in Norfolk, VA around 178?-97/1803 (Edenton Dist., Currituck Co., 1790 VA census) and in Kentucky from around 1797/1803-1832. Currituck Co., NC is the most northeast county in North Carolina, bordering Norfolk, VA. One indication that he moved to Fleming Co., KY in 1802; he sold land in Currituck in 1803 (or received cash then). He purchased 102 acres of farm land in 1804 in Fleming County located "on the waters of Johnstons fork of the Licking." Fleming Co. today is in northeastern Kentucy, with the County seat at Flemingsburg. Some of George and Flora's children were born there. George and Flora were later in Union Co., KY, where George died and Flora was mentioned on a later census. Union Co., KY is in northwestern Kentucky, on the Ohio river. The county seat is Morganfield.

George was listed as a blacksmith in some deed records:

This indenture made this 20th day of Nov. in the year of our Lord one-thousand-seven-hundred and ninety-seven between George Forker of the County of Currituck and state of North Carolina Black Smith of the one part and Mary Ballance widow of the other part witnesseth that the said George Forker for and in consideration of the sum of 200 Dollars to him in hand paid by the said Mary Ballance the receipt where of the George Forker and Flora Forker his wife doth hereby acknowledge and themselves there with to be fully satisfied contented and paid he the said George Forker hath bargained and so to conveyed and confirmed and by these presents doth grant Bargain and sell convey and confirm unto the said Mary Ballance her heirs and assigns forever one certain tract or parcel of land situated lying and being in County of Currituck near the great Swamp Bridge beginning at a Beach standing on the East side of the Road in a line which divides said land from that of John Towers thence with the said line on Easterly course to a piece of land called the Light swamp that formerly belonged to Thomas Hayman thence with said line to Henry Wilsons line thence with said line to the road leading from the Great Swamp Bridge to Virginia thence with Road the various courses there of to the first Station containing one hundred acres more or less together with all privileges and appertenences to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining to have and to hold the afsd premises with all the appertuntnances unto the said Mary Ballance her heirs and assigns forever and the said George Forker and Flora his wife will forever up in warrant and forever Defend the afore mentioned premises unto the said Mary Ballance her hris and assigns as their council Learned in the Law shall be reasonably devised or required in Witness of where the said George Forker and Flora his wife have here unto set their hands and seals the day and year above written sealed signed and delivered in the presence of

(witnesses Tho's Mason and James X Forker his mark)

One Matthias Forquier was in the index ; no more known.

"Lawyers and Lawmakers of Kentucky" compiled by H. Lewis, 1897 indicates that George Fauquier "was a son of Thomas Fauquier, who removed from Virginia to North Carolina in the eighteenth century." A Bible record and the will of his grandfather George May link George as a son of William Fauquier and Rebekah (unknown). The information about Virginia alludes to the Fauquier County which is named for (probable) cousin Francis Fauquier, but since the Governor's family and this family were living at the same time, any link will likely come a generation earlier in England. Naming conventions, including Thomas, William and Henry, however common, are consistent in the family which emigrated from England to Canada as well as in this family.

George witnessed a ded in Currituck styled "Nov. Term 1802" fo Uzziah McPharson to Edward Garrett (Deed Bk 3. p.331) and his name was listed "Geor Forker"

In a Currituck deed (book 3, pp. 441-2) Jesse Ives & wife, Marian (Cherry) Ives to Edward Garrett: " ... eastward along John Powers line thence running a north easterly course to George Forkers line thence along the sd. Forkers line northwesterly to Samuel Powers line thence ..."

1820 Census of Union Co., KY

1830 Census of Union Co., KY as George Forequier

Notes for Flora Hayman:

or Flora Haymon. Her birth date according to a Bible (not contemporary with her life) indicated she was born after her presumed father's death date, by longer than a year. She may have been born earlier, as it seems unlikely she could have been born to one of the sons of Flora Roberts.

1840 Census of Union Co., KY as Flora Fauquier.

Children of George Fauquier and Flora Hayman are:

8 i. John4 Fauquier, born 24 Oct 1788 in Currituck Co., NC.

16 ix. Joseph H. Fauquier, born 01 Sep 1807 in Fleming Co., KY. He married Mary Cash.

Notes for Joseph H. Fauquier:

The 1894 Bowden familiy tree says that this was George Fauquier who married a "Widow Mary Walker nee Cash"

Notes for Mary Cash:

Mrs. Mary Walker

6. James F.3 Fauquher (William2 Fauquier, <Unknown>1) was born Abt. 28 Jul 1772 in Poss. NJ, and died 11 Jun 1841 in Vanderburgh Co., IN. He married (1) <Unknown> Bef. 1793 in prob. NC. He married (2) Elizabeth Tully 15 Nov 1807 in Fleming Co., KY. She was born Bef. 1792 in Oyster Bay, NY, and died 06 Sep 1868 in Vanderburgh Co., IN.

Notes for James F. Fauquher:

Or James F. Fauquher. Biography of his granddaughter's husband indicates that his wife was "Margaret" in 1814 when Lydia was born. Did Elizabeth Tully go by Margaret?

Resided in Fleming Co., KY until 1820, then moved to Vanderburg Co., IN., just across the river from Union Co., KY. James Fauquhar. hyard@sigecom.net Michael Hillyard descends from this line (May, 2002)

Did he have a daughter by an unknown first wife in NC (the daughter is named Mary), who married Joseph Elston 9 Mar 1809 in Henry Co., KY?

About 1820 and 1821 John and Morrison Fitzgerald, James F. Fauquhar, Nickolas Long, and the Judkins family, became a part of this settlement. (identified as a few cabins raised in a cluster in sections 5 and 6, German Twp.) They did not come together, but each family, some of them having been for some time in neighboring localities, drifted in singly, and took their places in the small and slowly increasing community. James Fauquhar was always upright, and was tolerably "well fixed" financially for his day. He was one of the very few old settlers who in this township bought his land from the government and passed it on to his children. William Farquhar, a son of James, the pioneer, and probably the oldest native born citizen of the township, though only sixty-four years of age, still resides on the land entered by his father. John Fauquhar, now a resident of Evansville, and Mrs. Lydia Saunders, of Union Township, are the only other surviving descendants of James Fauquhar.

History of Vanderburgh County, Indiana - Brant & Fuller 1889

James' tombstone included an inscription: "Aged 68 yr. 10 mos. 14 days"

New Orleans, Thursday Morning Feb 4, 1864, Daily Picayune:

"Died, of consumption at 9:o'clock on Thursday morning, January 28, William H. Fauquier, in the 52d year of his age, native of Norfolk, Va., but for the last thirty five years a resident of this state.

"He is gone! No more will his smile brighten the home he has left desolate. No more will the sound of his tottering steps be hears. His great patience, his resignation to the will of God, his love for the Saviour, and, indeed, his whole life, have graven deep lines on the tablet of memory, which affection will often trace with emotions of ??? pleasure. A mournful void now rests where ??? he administered confort, but let us not mourn for him whose brightest anticipations have become delightful realities. His sould has purified itself for an ascent far above and beyond those painful vicissitudes and depressive casualties which so checker the life of man.

"May He who ??? the wind to the ??? lamb soften the severity of this dispensation to the disconsolate widow and only surviving son.

"Thou art gone to the grave, and its mansion forsaking, I Perchance thy weak spirit in fear hungr'd long

And the sound which thou didst hear was the seraphim's song."

A CANCER

It Causes the Death of John F. E. Fauquher

Formerly a Farmer of German Township

The death of John T.E. Fauquher removes another of the old settlers of Vanderburgh County. The deceased lived in German Township until about eight or nine years ago. At that time he sold his farm and built in this city where he has resided with his two daughters. He will be remembered as a plain, unassuming farmer; a quiet but accommodating neighbor, and a patient sufferer. Cancer in the face caused his death. His wife died twenty-two years ago, and she two [sic] passed away on the last day of the year.

Notes for William May Fauquher:

General Baptist Messenger: unknown date - clipping from Fauquhar family bible

Fauquhar. - On Oct. 12, 1897, I preached a sermon to the memory of Bro. Wm. Fauquhar, who died Oct. 10, 1897.

Bro. Fauquhar was born Jan. 29, 1824. At the time of his death he was 73 years, eight months and eleven days old. He was married to Lamira Shelton, in December, 1847. To them were born three children, who have all crossed the river of death. His wife died in 1855.

In 1856 he was married the second time. The second wife was a Miss Geneva Olmstood. To this marriage there were five children born. One died in infancy, the other four, Daniel, Roy, Abby and Lizzie, also the wife, are left to mourn his loss. Bro. Fauquhar professed faith in Christ at the age 21 years, and soon after joined the General Baptist (Old Liberty) church of which he has ever since been a consistant member. We visited brother Fauquhar a few days before his death, and found him full of faith and as trustful as a child. Like one of old he could truly say that my Redeemer liveth. The funeral sermon was preached at his late residence in German township, and from there the remains were born to their last resting place at the Camp ground cemetery, near Kratzville, and about 2 1/2 miles north of Evansville, Ind.

To the bereaved family we offer you the consoling words: Your loved one is not dead but in the language of the Master, "He only sleepeth". Live faithful, put your trust in God, and when your work on earth is done you will again meet this loving father and husband.

Branch where she made her home until last March since which time she lived near Princeton. She obeyed the injunction of the wise man who said, Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, for at the age of 12 years she surrendered her life to God. She was converted at a camp meeting held near her home and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church and lived a member until after her marriage when she joined Old Liberty church of General Baptist, her husband being a member and holding the office of deacon. She remained a member of Old Liberty church until the year 1900 when she transferred her membership to Bethlehem and was a member in good standing at the time of her death. It will thus be seen that she had given 62 years of her life to the service of God.

FAUQUIER, who is operating a good farm in Adams Township, was born in Miami County, Ohio, Nov. 22, 1821, being the son of Thomas and Phoebe (Hathaway) Fauquier, the former a native of Virginia, and the latter of Ohio. When a small child Thomas Fauquier was taken by his parents to Kentucky, where he grew to manhood, and thence emigrated to Ohio, where he married Miss Phoebe Hathaway, by whom he had ten children, five girls and five boys, of whom three girls and three boys are yet living. H. C. FAUQUIER, the possessor of a quarter-section of fine land in Adams Township, is the son of Thomas and Phebe (Hathaway) Fauquier, and was born in Miami County, Ohio, July 20, 1827. Mr. Fauquier is a Republican in his political affiliations. In the various relations of life, as husband, father, citizen, neighbor and friend, he maintains a good report and is highly esteemed by all who have the pleasure of his acquaintance.

FAUQUIER - Died, Thursday, Feb 27, 1890 in Adams township, Mahaska county, Iowa. HENRY C. FAUQUIER, in the 63rd year of his age.

Mr. Fauquier was born in Miami county, Ohio, July 20, 1827, went to the State of Indiana in 1848, and was married to Miss Harriet Woods, of White county, in the last named State,in 1849. Mrs. Fauquier is the sister of the Hon. Jas. K. Woods, now of Cowley county, Kansas, but who lived for many years in Mahaska county, a popular and highly respected citizen. It was the sister's great desire to have her brother at the funeral of her husband, which occurred on Sunday, March 2, and a dispatch was to that effect was sent him, but, for reasons unknown to the writer, he was not here. Mr. George Fauquier, a brother of the deceased, whose wife is also a sister of Mrs. F. in in California, and could not be present. Another brother, Owen Fauquier, living in Muscatine, was at the funeral.

There were born to this well-mated and happy couple eight children, five of whom are living. Frank E., Emma C. (now Mrs.Goddard), Dell C. (now Mrs. James Stafford), were at the funeral. Almedia P. who married James Fisher in 1880, died the 20th of January, 1885. Willie and Eddie died quite young. The deceased all rest with their father in Woods cemetery.

Mr. Fauquier moved to Iowa and settled on the place where he died, 39 years ago. The first time the writer met him, in the autumn of 1851, he read in his manly and handsome face what he proved to be through a long and intimate acquaintance - an honest man. He was strong in religious and political convictions, having settled them by his more than ordinary thinking powers. He lived by the golden rule, which made him a loving husband and father, a kind neighbor, and a true and faithful friend. Beside his good name he leaves a well-earned heritage in this world's goods, in the way of a well-stocked farm and comfortable home, to the enjoyment of those he loved.

The funeral was largely attended, at which the writer officiated in things spiritual, with Undertaker McCurdy in charge. The many tears shed as the last sad rites progressed spoke eloquently of tendrils of love that had been sundered, yet was their sorrow chastened by faith that separation was but for a season, and they would all soon meet again in that happy land where partings are no more. All that is mortal of Henry C. Fauquier sleeps the quiet sleep of death and awaits the resurrection morn. Peace to his ashes, and sacred be his memory.

He married (2) Julia Bleeker Mallaby 04 Jun 1890 in Nutley, Essex, NJ, daughter of Theodore Mallaby and Elizabeth Bleecker. She was born 14 Sep 1854 in NY City, NY, and died 20 Aug 1936 in Jersey City, Hudson, NJ.

Notes for Restora Mealer Fauquier:

Restorer Mealer Fauquier

An only child of a carpenter with property and slaves, curiously not mentioned on census of 1850 with parents (at school, with relatives?). Variously claimed to be French, one census lists him as from "Maine", another "Alabama", although family lived in Donaldsonville, LA, and he was at least fourth generation American. His children were raised by their aunt in Mississippi, and his wife died young. He left his wife and after she died he married his second cousin's widow in New Jersey.

Married in Carondolet St. Church, New Orleans by father of the bride, pastor Joseph Burch Walker.

Restora lived at 307 Coliseum and was a clerk in 1868. He was a property clerk living at 266 6th in 1870. His address in 1871 was 293 Carondelet. He was a cotton clerk at Richardson & May, living on Melpomene at Magazine in 1873. He lived at 493 S. Rampart in 1874. He lived at 120 Philip, with the Rev. JB Walker, his father-in-law, in 1876. He was a bookkepper for AW Hyatt in 1877, and moved to 562 1/2 Camp in 1878. He was a clerk for the C. St. L. & N. O. RR, living at 489 Baronne in 1879. His wife died in 1888.

Other than in New Jersey as a Quaker name, I have only found a similar name on one other individual, coincidentally from that area of SC from which the Hardwick family was, and not known to be related:

Key Restored Mobley born 11 Mar 1878. I am convinced that in the Fauquier & Mealer families, this name is a patriotic name and not a Quaker name.

Notes for Mary Ann Walker:

Suffered illness as a child, during epidemics of New Orleans. Tin-type photograph exists.

Ann died March 21, 1888, of exhaustive shock, at her home at 223 Delachaise in New Orleans. She was buried in Ocean City, MS (near Gulfport) in the Walker family plot. (now Gulfport, within site of the intersection of two major highways). Mary Ann's brother was William W. Walker, in his day a well-known author and one-time school-teacher (1870) and (as mentioned in his father Rev. Dr. Joseph Burch Walker's obituary) a contributor to the New Orleans Picayune.

Princeton Daily Clarion - News Monday, August 17, 1908

"SUDDEN SUMMONS"

"Unexpected Death of Mrs. Willis Montgomery"

"Mrs. Elizabeth Hannah Montgomery, widow of the late Willis Montgomery, died of heart disease Sunday night at 11:30 o'clock at her home three miles west of the city, after but a very brief illness. Mrs. Montgomery ate a hearty supper and seemed as well as usual at that time, but several hours later the attack of heart failure came upon her, and she passed away soon after a physician arrived.

Mrs. Montgomery was a most estimable woman, and her untimely taking off brings grief not only to the family, but to friends innumerable. She was fifty years of age.

The funeral will take place from White Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.B. Pilant and the interment will be in White Church Cemetery."

Montgomery. - Elizabeth H. Montgomery was born in Vanderburgh county, Indiana, June 24th, 1858, died at her home near Princeton, Ind., August 17th, 1908 at the age of 50 years, 1 month and 23 days. She was married to Willis Montgomery Oct. 13, 1881. To this union there were born four children, two boys and two girls. One of the girls, Abbie, died several years ago. The surviving children are Willie, Otto and Ina May. These are left to mourn her departure. She was converted to the Christian religion at the age of 19 years and joined Old Liberty General Baptist church at Howell. Ind. After her marriage she moved to the neighborhood of White church. She then took a letter from old Liberty church and united with Columbia church in which she lived a devoted Christian life until death. She was of a religious disposition and enjoyed talking on religious subjects very much. She was never happier than when testifying to the saving power of Christ. The one thing that was nearest her heart was that her children would live Christian lives. In a splendid Christian faith she fell asleep in the possession of a precious hope of spending eternity in heaven, she bade the world farewell. Besides the three children she leaves three grandchildren, two brothers, D.W. and L.C. Fauquhar, one sister, Mrs. Abbie Murphy of Poseyville, Ind., aand a large number of friends and relation who sincerely mourn her departure. But we mourn not as those without hope, for we have the evidence that she was ready to go and is at rest. The funeral services were held from the White church near Princeton August 19th. To the sorrowing ones and in an especial way to the children the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community is extended. May the blessings of our Heavenly Father abide with with these bereft ones and may he mercifully guide each one and finally gather them to himself in heaven is my earnest prayer.

Generation No. 6

91. Thomas W.6 Sleeth (Eliza Ann5 Fauquier, Thomas4, George3, William2, <Unknown>1) was born 24 Aug 1840 in Greene Co., OH. He married (1) Susanna J. Barr 1874 in Greene Co., OH, daughter of Cyrus Barr and Margaret <Unknown>. She died Jun 1876 in At the birth of their only daughter. He married (2) Feddie K. Cox Aft. 1883, daughter of Richard Cox and Jane Newell.

Notes for Thomas W. Sleeth:

Thomas W. Sleeth. One of the old and honored residents of Brookston whose memory goes back to the time when he picked strawberries on the present site of this thriving little city, Thomas W. Sleeth is now living in retirement after many years passed in agricultural pursuits in White County. A resident of this county since his infancy, his life has passed with its borders, and he has seen and taken part in the ativities which have transformed this part of Indiana into one of the most fertile sections of the great Middle West. Mr. Sleeth was born August 24, 1840, in Greene County, Ohio, a son of Alvin and Eliza Ann (Fauquier) Sleeth. He is of Scotch-Irish descent, belonging to a family which originated in Scotland, here the name was spelled Leeth, but which was changed to Sleeth in Ireland. His great-great-grandfather, Thomas Sleeth, was born in County Armagh, Ireland, and came to America about the year 1756, landing at Jamestown, Virginia, where Alexander Sleeth was born. He subsequently moved to what is now Harrison County, West Virginia. In the Revoluton he was with a regiment of Virginia infantry till the end of the war. the family was taken to Greene County, Ohio, by grandfather Thomas Sleeth in 1810, who was an infantry soldier in the War of 1812, and who subsequently came to White County, Indiana, in 1839, and settled in Prairie Township, where he built one of the first frame houses erected. Thomas W. Sleeth was one year old when brought by his parent to White County, and his education was secured in the public schoools of the country districts. When the Civil war came on he had just about attained his majority, and October 5, 1861, enlisted in the Forty-sixth Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, as a private in the company, A, of Capt. John H. Gould, of Delphi. During the next thrity-seven months he served with that famous and hard-fighting organization, being honorable discharged at Indianapolis, Indiana, December 1, 1864. His military career was one filled with much active service and he participated in many sanguine battles, in which he bore himself as a brave, capable and faithful soldier. At the great battle of Champion Hills he received two wounds, the scars of which he carries to this day. His military service completed, Mr. Sleeth returned to the farm, and during the remainder of his active career he devoted himself to the pursuits of the soil, winning success as a general farmer and stockraiser on his farm of 160 acres, located in Prairie Township. He has lived in his comfortable home since his retirment in 1913. Many years have passed since his boyhood here, but he still remembers the strawberry patches on the present site of Brookston, at a time when he was compelled to go to Pittsburg, Carroll County, for his nearest trading point. He is a member of Anchor Lodge. No 289, Knights of Pythias, of Brookston. He is a republican in his political views but has been content to remain simply a voter, his only appearance as a candidate being when he was his party's moninee for the office of county treasurer. Mr. Sleeth married Miss susanna J. Barr, daughter of Cyrus and Margaret Barr, early settlers of White County, and granddaughter of John Barr, who donated a part of the land on which the Town of Monticello now stands. One child was born to Mr. and Mrs. Sleeth, both mother and child dying at its birth. He was married the second time to Miss Feddie K. Cox, daughter of Richard and Jane (Newell) Cox, and granddaughter of Robert Newell, who was one of the first settlers of Prairie Township, and assisted in the organization of White County serving for a time subsequently as county commissioner.

Notes for Thomas Fauquier:

THOMAS FAUQUIER.

Among the leading citizens of Merrick county, Nebraska, none stands higher in the minds of his associates than the gentleman here named. For many years he has been a resident of this section, and with his family enjoys the comforts of a pleasant rural home, and the esteem of all with whom he comes in contact.

Thomas Fauquier was born in Keokuk, Iowa, October 8, 1860, and was the youngest of three children in the family of Ephriam and Margaret (Gosnell) Fauquier, who had two sons and one daughter born to them. The father was a veteran of the civil war, enlisting in Company C, Third Iowa Volunteer Cavalry from Birmingham Iowa, in September, 1861, and died in Benton barracks from exposure and cold contracted during the Siege of Vicksburg. He was survived by his widow and three children.

The family moved from Iowa to Louisville, Kentucky, in 1866, and to Danville, Illinois, in 1868, and in the fall of 1872, our subject's mother and her three children, Charles, Lizzie, and Thomas, came to Merrick county, Nebraska, and made homestead entry on the south half, southeast quarter, and south half, southwest quarter, of section twenty-two, township thirteen, range eight, and this has been the home farm until this date.

Thomas Fauquier, from his twelfth year, grew up in Merrick county on the old farm, which is still his home place, and also that of his mother, who is now in her eighty-seventh year. His brother, Charles, now lives in Holt county, Nebraska, and his sister, Lizzie, who was the wife of George W. Welton, is deceased. She left seven children.

Mr. Fauquier was married to Miss Bell Bruno, November 21, 1897, on the Gosnell farm, just north of his own home.

Mr. Fauquier grew up to manhood in Merrick county a farmer and stockman, and he is one of the few pioneer boys that still live in their old original homestead farm. He is at the present time deputy county assessor in Prairie Creek township, and also moderator in school district number twenty-eight. He has always been a strong democrat. Mr. Fauquier is a man who has always taken his part in the upbuilding of his county.

Mother Fauquier is a woman of the pioneer days who brought her little family into Merrick county in the early years to brave whatever the future held in store for them; and they are today one of the well known families of their section, and hold the respect and esteem of a large circle of friends.

Mr. Fauquier is a man of sound principle, and possesses the sterling qualities which when combined go to make the perfect man.

He married Elizabeth Harriet 'Lizzie' Farrell 28 Mar 1899 in New Orleans, Orleans, LA, daughter of Daniel O'Farrell and Sophia Habrecht. She was born 04 Nov 1877 in New Orleans, Orleans, LA, and died 02 Feb 1961 in Jackson, East Feliciana, LA.

Notes for Joseph Walker Fauquier:

A conductor of streetcars in New Orleans. Listed as "carman" on death certificate. Was a "good provider" before he was blinded by glaucoma. He died at age 45, of pneumonia.

He was born at Mr. J. B. McAllister's, corner of Julia and Carondolet. He was baptized on 16th day by Rev. W. B. Tudor, pastor Carondolet St. Church. (Presbyterian) The family was probably Lutheran (Evangelical), as was mentioned in his wife's records. It appears that the family moved from the eastern end of the garden district, not far from downtown, to an area in or near Carrollton some time after Joseph's death. His son Restora Loyd was married to an Evangelical woman.

Notes for Elizabeth Harriet 'Lizzie' Farrell:

Lizzie Farrell went to school until the fourth grade. As a consequence, she was said to be "backward, especially in grammar." She was a "Lutheran" and "belongs to the Evangelical Church." She lived with her father and did some housework for a neighbor while going to school, and after leaving school continued to do this kind of work until she was married at 20. Her husband, Joseph Walker Fauquier, was a street car conductor, and a "good provider." He went blind from glaucoma, making it necesary for Lizzie to obtain employment to support the family. Her daughter helped until her marriage two years later, at which time the middle children pitched in. She cleaned cars for the Pullman Palace Car Co. at the I.C. Depot, making from $1.40 to $2.90 a day. After that she cleaned curtains at home, making $200 a season, and was helped by the children. "With this help she has always managed to get along without serious difficulty financially." Her husband died in 1918, about eight years before she lost her youngest son, at age ten, of an accident involving a toy pistol, which caused tetanus. The next day, she was admitted to a mental hospital in New Orleans, and after a few releases and readmissions, she lived out her life in East Louisiana State Hospital, Jackson, LA suffering from mental illness.

Her records indicate several things of genealogical value: She had four brothers and four sisters, living in good health at the time of her admission (1926-7). Her father lived to age 70 (dying prior to 1928) and died in an auto accident. Her father's mother died of TB when over 70 years of age, and her mother's mother died of a lightning strike (age unknown). Her mother died of chronic dyspepsia and floating kidney, and predeceased her father. Her children, in 1926, were described "Her first child is 27, a girl, who is married and in good health, and the mother of two children of her own. The second is 23, married, in good health, and has one child. The third is 18, and is a pressman in a printing office [my grandfather Restora Loyd Fauquier]." At least two of her sisters were "deaf and dumb." Her daughter, Mary (Fauquier) Broker, corresponded with her until her death, and selected correspondence with the hospital administrators elicits other medical and personal details about Lizzie, that she "worked in the kitchen" and was most often pleasant to be around.

Children of Joseph Fauquier and Elizabeth Farrell are:

244 i. Mary Elizabeth7 Fauquier, born 05 Mar 1900 in New Orleans, Orleans, LA; died 25 Dec 1977 in River Ridge, Jefferson, LA. She married Charles Frank Broker; born 1896; died 31 Mar 1957.

245 ii. Joseph Breaux Fauquier, born Abt. 1904 in New Orleans, Orleans, LA; died Jul 1994 in Seligman, MO. He married Elizabeth Jung; died Oct 1986 in Seligman, MO.

246 iii. Restora Loyd Fauquier, born 09 Feb 1909 in New Orleans, Orleans, LA; died 10 Dec 1988 in Shreveport, Caddo, LA. He married Ruth Catherine Junker 16 Nov 1932 in New Orleans, Orleans, LA; born 31 Oct 1898 in New Orleans, Orleans, LA; died 03 Jan 1987 in Shreveport, Caddo, LA.

Notes for Restora Loyd Fauquier:

Loyd: Early in life a private detective, a soldier, later a career government employee. A prison guard in Oklahoma, and a Treasury agent ("revenoor") who carried a gun, but "never had to use it." A Mason, 33rd Degree, President of the Caddo Lodge. He was a Presbyterian deacon and elder, and he was a singer.

He was an agent for the alcohol and tobacco tax division of the Treasury Department. He was appointed investigator for the alcohol tax unit in New Orleans after prohibition was repealed on July 1, 1933. He had also worked for the Treasury Department a year before the repeal. He was assigned to the Shreveport district on Sept. 15, 1941, with 16 North Louisiana parishes in his jurisdiction. During his service, he was sent on special assignments to Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi. He also worked for the department on regular duty at McComb, Miss., and Baton Rouge and Jennings. (from a newspaper article of his retirement). He described his job as "busting stills."

He joined the army and was preparing to serve overseas as a photographer on reconnaissance missions, when World War II ended in 1945. He was quite a photographer, and did his own development and colorizing (hand painting) of portraits.

Notes for Ruth Catherine Junker:

Her godmother was Miss Katie Kolman, and her godfather was Mr. L. Herman.

As a young girl, she was raised in an Evangelical church, as her parents were descendants of German immigrants. She was nine years older than her husband, and had been working at her father's store in Carrollton, now part of New Orleans, for several years after her schooling was completed. She never learned to drive. She regularly played the piano, accompanying her husband as he sang on numerous occasions.
