Nancy and her mother were wonderful hostesses, and began the Saturday
morning with breakfast of Creamed Chipped Beef at the Farmer's Market in
Hagerstown, an old tradition in their family.
Our first visits were to the cemeteries, first St. John's Evangelical
Lutheran Church Cemetery on the corner of Ward Kline Rd. and Church Hill
Rd. The land for the Chrurch was donated, according to Nancy, by Daniel
Gaver, and is sometimes known as "Daniel's Church."
George and Mary's stones are located across the road from the Church.
George's stone is very worn by the elements, and barely readable.

Last stop was at the old George Marker homestead on Easterday Rd.
The old log house has been restored and is beautiful inside. The present
owner graciously let us walk through on the way to the site of the old
mill.Older photo and history of the Mill

Nothing remains of the mill but the crumbling foundation
walls. From the old postcard picture (on the above link) you don't
get a sense of how steep and rocky the terrain is. BIG boulders, poison
ivy, and Jack-in-the-Pulpits surrounded the place.

In talking to Nancy's mother, she discovered that the "thing" in their backyard that was used for years for cracking nuts, was actually a cog from the old mill. An exciting link to the past. Thank you, Nancy and Sam, for all the time and energy researching this area.
