John Lynch – Great Grandfather

 

John Lynch was born around 1824 in Ireland.

 

John first appears in America in Census for 1850 Maine – Saco – York Co.

John Lynch  25, laborer, b. Ireland

 

John’s  future  wife, Mary O’Donnell had also immigrated from Ireland to Saco, Maine.  She was

living  there with her parents, Owen and Mary O’Donnell and her brothers and sister.

John Lynch and Mary O’Donnell were married on November 17, 1850 at St.

Dominick’s Church in Portland, Maine by Rev. J. O’Donnell in presence of William

Golden and Ellen O’Brien

 

John and Mary Lynch had four children,  all born in New Haven, CT

Annie Lynch,  b. November  17, 1852  

Mary Lynch, b. 1857  

Joseph Lynch ,  b. March 1, 1860

Eugene Lynch, b. 1864, d, Sept. 28, 1878

 

John next appears in the 1852-53 New Haven, CT City Directory

John Lynch, laborer, 49 Moracco

Owen O’Donald, laborer, 49 Moracco

1859-60 New Haven, CT City Directory – next appearance

John Lynch, mason, home 90 Davenport Ave.

Also at same address were Mary’s brothers,  Patrick O’Donnell, mason,  John  O’Donnell,

Blacksmith and Mary’s father,  Owen O’Donnell, Gardener

 

John shows up in the New Haven City Directories as “mason” from 1852 to 1868.

 

JOHN LYNCH DEATH

John died in Saco, Maine, at age 43, May 11, 1869 of Phillus Pulnum

 

 

John’s widow, Mary, and their children continued to live in New Haven, CT.

From the time of John’s death, Mary lived with her married daughter, Annie Lynch

Galligan and Annie’s husband, James Galligan and daughters Louise and Mary.  Her

brothers, Patrick and John O’Donnell were there also.

 

In 1882, Mary Lynch left New Haven CT.  She moved to Joliet, IL and went to live near her younger

Sister, Bridget Maher.  Her daughter, Annie Galligan, with daughters, Lucy, and Mary, came too. 

Annie’s husband, James Galligan had died Sept. 29, 1880 in New Haven, leaving her a widow.

 

Annie Lynch Galligan met Peter Cunningham in Joliet, IL.  She married Peter Cunningham April 1,

1884 in Chicago.  By 1900, Mary Lynch went to Chicago to live with Peter Cunningham and Annie. 

 

Mary Lynch died January 09, 1904 in Chicago.

Mary Lynch was buried January 11, 1904 in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in same grave as

her granddaughter, Dorothy Cunningham of 3728 Rockwell who died 9-12-95.
