Oct. 4, 1887, Patrick Gordon, age 34, married Mary Sheridan, age 26           

 

First entry in St. Columbkille Church marriage register  was following:

Patrick Gordon and Mary Sheridan were united in holy matrimony on Oct. 6, 1887

Witnesses were Thomas Quinn(?) and Mary Cain(?)

The officiating priest was Rev. John Fogerty

Age at death, about  72.   Length  of residence in Dubuque, 45 years. How long in U.S.- 61 years. 

Born – County  Cork Ireland.  Occupation  was stationary engineer for ICRR.  Buried Mt. Olivet

Patrick Gordon Is Called by Death  

Patrick J. Gordon, 73 years old, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Louis Nehls, 120

North Booth Street. Tuesday afternoon at 4:45 o’clock after an illness of two years. The

funeral will be held Friday morning from the Nehls residence to the Church of the Nativity

where requiem mass will be read at 10 o’clock.  Burial will be made in Mount Olivet

cemetery.    The deceased was born in County Cork,* Ireland, and came to America 61

years ago.  For the past 45 years he has made his home in Dubuque. He was a Catholic.

An  attendant at The Church of the Nativity. And  died comforted by the last rites of

his religion.  He was a member of St. Raphael’s court of the C. O. F.    He is survived by

two daughters. Mrs. Louis Nehls, Dubuque, and Mrs. John Lyons, Forest Lake, Minn.,

two sons, Harry, Dubuque, and Justin, Chicago and one  brother, George,  Lemars, Ia.

            *It is uncertain if he was born in Cork and there are doubts on other details.

James Gordon, one of the County’s earliest settlers passed away at the home of his son-in-law,

David Heaney, near Meriden at 8:10 Sunday evening.  Death resulted from Peritonitis after an

illness of about ten weeks.  He leaves a large family, five sons being In Dakota and two make

their home in Iowa. There are also several daughters.  For many years he has made his home

near Meriden and was about 75 years old.  Funeral services  will be conducted by Rev.

Desmond in The Catholic church and internment will be in the Catholic Cemetery on Wednesday.
