Tilley Ledger Book

Home Up Next

This is a transcript of Samuel Jefferson Tilley's ledger book.  The notes seem to be those of Lillian Maud Tilley Ulbrich (she was a school teacher), Fannie Marie McMahon Tilley and Samuel Jefferson.  Possibly the letters were copied from other documents by Lillian Maud and the Bear Creek Notes are of events in Bear Creek where Lillian Maud was teaching.

Dear Sister.  I will try to pen you a few lines in answer to your most cordial invitation to my neices weding if such you would be inclined to call it.  I have had a great many invitations to diferent places and that was the coolest one that I ever received.  Mary you do not know Sam yet.  You know that in our sircumstances that he would of bin the last person on earth that would of imposed him self and family on you all, but at the same time there is nothing calculated to make him treat my relatives with more indifference than to put him off in the maner as to tell his family they could come if wanted too.  He never said any thing but that he was sorry on Maud's account that she had worked so hard and saved his money, thinking she might receive an invitation and was disapointed.  She seemed to think so much of you all.

What she ever did to any of you is more that he can tell.  She is now gone to Larado with her lady friends and relitives of Devine.  I have just received a letter from Sallie and Dick asking us to be sure and come out to spend Xmas week with them.  It might be that we can go.  Can't tell yet.  I guess we would look all right out there.  Mary I can't help but feel hurt in the way you sent your invite.  You should of sent me an invitation strate out (that is if you felt disposed to invite me at all) and let me or Sam used our judgment on whether come or not.

You know that if the scarlet fever or any other contageous type disease that we would not of taken our family.  So a mans honesty never keeps him from being a gentleman nor neather dose his wealth make him one.  We will never know nor care how sick or poore we are one hundred years from now.  I will close this, sincerely hoping that you will all injoy your selves and don't think of this as a slight to me at all for I never take more at heart than I can kick of at my heels.  Yours as ever.

                               Dear daughter

I will try to write you a few lines which I hope will find you injoying the best of health.  I have bin trying very hard to get good started to plowing but seems like a hard case.  Never the less I have got nearly all the ground broke that I want to plant in corn.  The ground is getting so dry and hard we can hardily plow it.  I do not know when I will get through breaking, may have to plant with out breaking.  Well I guess your postal money is bout give out by this time.  I will try to send you some in order that you might need it before you could get it other wise.  Did Abb ever visit to you.  We got a letter from him some time a go and answered it and told him where you wer in case he got in a notion to write to you.  I told him I guess the reason he wrote to us that he had writen to all the kin and then the dogs and happened to think of us.  If they get mad they would not be in any worse fix than I was when I received there letter.

Our school ended on the 7th with evry body well pleased and satisfied with the work done in the school by both prinicipal & assistant.  In fact the quitest school we have had for a number of years.

Mr. Wilson that has bin staying with Mr. W. T. Bailey for his health, started on Sunday for his home in Missippi.

On Saturday the 8. G. E. Coraspontent in company with Fra H. D. Bishop and R. M. Ketchum started for Justice Court Prc. No. 5 Aticosa Co.  On nearing the designated point the people came flocking from evry direction.  I guess the Judge was honored by Represenitives from three Cos. Medina, Frio, & Aticosa.  Evry body expecting to see or hear something, but alas failed.  All came out at the same hole he wint in at and I think closed it in after him.

We surly apreciate the good faith and confidence the Devine merchants has in holding the farmers up in this trying ordeal.  Let us all sink or swim together
