The Sears family detailed in these pages descends from one William Sears, who was born the 11th of March 1813. According to the 1922 death certificate of his youngest son, John L. Sears, William was born in Anderson County, South Carolina. William died December 14th, 1890 at his home near Townville, South Carolina and is buried with his wife, Elizabeth, at Cedar Grove Methodist Church cemetery near Townville. According to William’s obituary he married Elizabeth Whitt on August 18, 1835 at Elizabeth’s home between Williamston and Belton, South Carolina. The following year William served as a soldier in the Florida Indian War of 1836. He and Elizabeth had thirteen children; five sons and eight daughters. Most of their children and many grandchildren continued to live in Anderson County and adjacent Oconee County, South Carolina. The Sears surname is not very common in this section of South Carolina so those of you who seek Sears ancestors from upstate counties of Anderson and Oconee may likely establish a link to our William Sears.
Much of the information contained in these pages is from secondary sources, descendants and interested individuals. I have tried to confirm as much of the data as possible, but keep in mind there may be errors within these pages.
