State of Iowa Lucas County
On this April 7th 1903 before me Clerk of the District Court within and for the county and state aforesaid herself appeared Sarah M. Sands aged 56 years who being by me duly sworn declares that she is the widow of William G. Sands who enlisted in Company K 3rd Regt Ill Cav and served in the military service of the United States during the war of the Rebellion for as much as 90 days, and was honorably discharged therefrom. (proof thereof being on file in said soldier’s ???? Cert No. 583342) Said soldier died April 2nd 1903 near Lucas, Lucas Co Iowa. That she was married to said soldier under the name of Sarah M. Bingham, at Bond Co Ill on the ?9th? Day of May 1868 by Rev George Kimbro, there being no legal ??????? to such marriage. That she was never previously married but her husband was previously married to Catherine Kimbrell she died previous to our marriage. That she has not remarried since the death of said soldier. That she is without other means of support than her own manual labor. That she has not heretofore applied for a pension. That her said husband never served in the army or navy of the United States other than as herein stated. That she makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the act of June 27 1890. She hereby appoints ?G? ?W? ?Alexander? Of Chariton Iowa her lawful attorney to prosecute her claim her Post Office is Lucas Iowa.

Also personally appeared E A Anderson residing at Chariton Ia and J M Hanlin residing at Chariton Iowa persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit and who being by me sworn say that they were present and saw Sarah M. Sands the claimant make her mark to the above and foregoing declaration that they ?????? Believe from her appearance and documents in her possession and conversations had with her and her son J. F. Sands that including the Pension Cert of her deceased husband that she is the identical person she represents herself to be and that they have no interest in this claim.

NOTE: Sarah received pension payments until her death on 17 January 1934. Her son, Jacob F. Sands and his wife, Ida, of Ottumwa, Iowa cared for Sarah during the last 2 years of her life, and he filed a claim on 5 April 1934 for reimbursement of unpaid doctor bills and for Sarah’s burial. She was buried in Marion County, Iowa. ****************************************************************** |
