Meigs County

 

      On the fifteenth day of April A. D. 1862 personally appeared before me a notary public within and for the county and State aforesaid William Sands aged thirty-one years a resident of the county of Meigs and State of Ohio who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is the identical William Sands who enlisted in the service of the United States as a private of Capt Mc Adams Company (“E”) in the 22d Regiment of Illinois Volunteers in the war with the South and was honorably discharged on the 7th day of February A. D. 1862, that while in the service he received an injury while handling seige guns in the performance of his duty and in obedience to the command of his superior officer which injury happened about the first of August last and has caused a physical disability for military service and for obtaining a livelyhood which is total and on account of which disability he has received his said discharge.  For further particulars in reffernce to said disability certificates:  1st of Capt S. G. Mc Adams herewith filed and marked “A”:  2d to the certificate of B. Woodward assist Sergeon of the said 22d Regiment of Ills Vol. Herewith filed and marked “B”.  And for the purpose of prosecuting his claim he hereby appoints Lewis Paine of Pomeroy Meigs county Ohio his attorney in fact and with authority to receive his pension certificate.

     Personally appeared Wm J. ?Prall? And Hiram Hobbs persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit and who being by me duly sworn say that they were present and saw William Sands swear to the foregoing declaration and they further swear that they have every occasion to believe from the appearance of the applicant and their acquaintance with him that he is the identical person he represents himself to be and that they reside in the county and State aforesaid and that they have no interest in this claim.

Sworn to and subscribed by the said William Sands as applicant and by the said Wm J. Prall and Hiram Hobbs as witnesses before me this 15th day of April A. D. 1862.

     I H. ?L.? Sibley Clerk of the court of Common Pleas in and for said county do hereby certify that S. S. Paine before whom the foregoing statement and affidavit were sworn and subscribed to and who has thereunto subscribed his name was at the time of so doing an acting Notary Public in and for the county aforesaid duly appointed commissioned and qualified and that his signature above is genuine.

 

                                                                   In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand

                                                                  and affix the seal of said county at Pomeroy

NOTE:  The above application for disability pension was suspended February 4th, 1865 pending a new declaration and examination by two civil surgeons.  Claim rejected on or after ?January? 10, 1870 when “Agent writes that client whereabouts is unknown”.

 

**This William Sands (Co E, 22nd Reg Inf, IL Vols) has been ruled out as our ancestor, but perhaps someone can use the above information in their own search for family.**
