WELCOME TO THE SANDS FAMILY WEB SITE!

My name is Trish Jones.  I’ve been working on my Dad’s family genealogy for many years, but have had little luck extending this family past the mid 1800’s.  I have gathered a good bit of data on Sands families in various locations while trying to find my William G., and perhaps in these pages you will find a clue to help in your own search for ancestors.

The earliest known in my Sands family is William G. Sands who was born in Illinois on 2 April 1830 (George Sands Family Bible).  He died 2 April 1903 (George Sands Bible Record),  in Iowa (CW Pension Record), and is buried at Goshen Cemetery, Union Township, Lucas County, Iowa (Lucas County, IA Cemetery Records).  He married Catherine Kimbro on  17 Mar 1853 in Bond County, Illinois.  William married 2nd Sarah M. Bingham on 30 Apr 1868, Bond County, Illinois, after Catherine’s death on 1 Nov 1867.

William served in the Civil War in Company K of the 3rd Consolidated Calvary, Illinois and was receiving a pension from 1890 until his death.  His 2nd wife, Sarah received pension payments until her death in 1934.   Family tradition indicates that William may have been a carpenter.  His son was a carpenter, and at one time made ax handles.  A grandson was a carpenter and general housing contractor for several years.  This tradition of carpentry and building skills has been passed down to subsequent generations.

A descendent of William G. Sands, Islo Freeman Gardner, indicated that the Sands family originated in North Carolina.  I have searched for a North Carolina connection as well as for leads in other states, but since William was born in Illinois, there is still a missing generation to locate before any serious research can be done.
