Elbert DYE [Parents] was born about 1877 in Russell Co., Virginia. He died 15 Aug 1947 in Russell Co., Virginia from Stomach Cancer. Elbert married Alice Mary HONAKER on 16 Feb 1898 in Russell Co., Virginia.

Elbert Dye and Alice Honaker were both decendants
of Hans Jacob Honaker. Elbert, born about 1877, was the son of Henderson
Dye and Cynthia Honaker. Alice, born June 6, 1883, was the daughter of
Lilburn Honaker and Nancy J. Ray.
Elbert and Alice were married on February 14, 1898 (Valentines Day). They
lived on a farm near Thompson Creek on Big A Mountain near Honaker,
Virginia and raised a family of seven children, three boys and four
girls. Their oldest son, Dellie, was always kind of sickly and died of
pneumonia in 1918 at the age of 18. Their second son, Charlie, was
killed as a result of a gunshot wound in the back. Their third son,
Leonard, who was my grandfather told me that Charlie had gone hunting
near Finney, Virginia with some friends and that during the night they
had stopped to get some sleep in an abandoned house. It happened that at
this time there were two fugitives that the police were looking for in
the area and the police came upon Charlie and his friends in the house.
The police apparently thought that they were the fugitives and in the
confusion Charlie was shot. He was taken into Finney where he died of
his wounds. This happened in 1924 and Charlie was 20 years old. My
grandfather told me that he had begged them to let him go with them but
that they had slipped off and left him behind.
Elbert and Alice other five children all married and moved away from the
home place. Myrtle was the first to come to Cincinnati. She was
followed later by Ollie and Gertie and later still by Kenneth Dye.
Leonard, and Jettie were the only children to stay near Honaker.
As Elbert and Alice grew older, they divided the farm among their five
children and moved into a house which Kenneth had built for them
on his farm on Big A Mountain. They lived here until Elbert died on
August 15, 1947 of stomach cancer. After Elberts death, Alice stayed
often with her children and grandchildren.
Alice had diabetes but lived to be nearly 81 years of age. She died on
February 3, 1964. Elbert and Alice along with their sons
Dellie and Charlie and several other relatives are buried in the
Whitt/Dye Cemetery on Big A Mountain near where they raised their family.

Charlie Whitt/Dye Cem. Big A Mtn. Honaker, Va.. He Hunting trip near Finney, VA.
Charlie Dye was on a hunting trip near Finney, VA. He and two friends,
one by the name of Ball and the other was a son of Oscar Honaker. They
had decided to spend the night in an abandoned house that they had come
upon. At the same time, lawmen were searching for Fred Honaker, another
son of Oscar Honaker, who had escaped after being sentenced to ten years
in prison for robbery and was believed to have been involved in the
killing of a policeman in Cincinnati, Ohio. The lawmen had received
information that Fred Honaker may be staying the night in the abondoned
house and made a raid on it in an attempt to apprehend who they beleived
to be Fred Honaker. In the ensuing confusion, and with a little light,
the lawmen opened fire on the occupants killing Charlie Dye and the Ball
man and wounding the Honaker man. Fred Honaker was not in the building
at the time of the raid. |
