John Calvin and Jane Phipps, his second wife,  moved to Tazewell County, Virginia, near Richlands with all of their children except Alvin and Horton sometime after 1883.

John C. Phipps sold several items on December 23, 1893 to his son-in-law, Alfred Ward, in December, 1893.  The items included 1 red cow, 1 white cow ($15/each), 10 hogs ($2/each), one yoke of oxen ($30), 3 stands of bees ($3), all his household and kitchen furniture and farming tools ($25) for a total value of $108.  John received one dollar and "other valuable consideration known to and agreed on...as payment in full" for the items.  John's son Levi (Lee) witnessed the documentation of the sale, which was recorded in Buchanan County Circuit Court on December 28, 1893.  This appears to be more or less giving the items to the Wards.  Perhaps he had just found out he had cancer, as he died less than 5 months later on May 22, 1894 at Big Creek near Richlands, VA of cancer.

He was counted in a census 1910 in Rich Valley, Smyth Co., VA. He was counted in a census 1920 in Marion, Smyth Co., VA.

Other marriages:
, Unknown
STEELE, Elizabeth Florence

Cart was listed on the Virginia Confederate Pension List in 1922 in Smyth County, VA.  He walked with the help of a cane, as he was wounded in battle at Perryville, TN in 1862.

Cart filed for divorce in Smyth County, VA, offering depositions from witnesses that his wife, Mary, had deserted him and was reportedly living in adultery with another man.  According to the record of proceedings, Mary was living outside Virginia at the time, so notice was published in the local paper for 4 weeks where she was living (unclear where she was living at the time).  The decree was issued for the divorce of B. C. Wilson and Mary Bowling Wilson on March 28, 1891.

He married Florence Steele on January 20, 1892 in Tazewell County.  He said he was divorced from his first wife (Mary Bowling) and that he lived in Russell County at the time.

He was indicted on charges of carrying a concealed weapon in Russell County, VA in 1894.  Those charges were dropped later by issue of the Court:

"This day came the attorney for the Commonwealth, and with the consent of the Court, sayeth that he will not further prosecute on behalf of the Commonwealth in these cases; and accordingly these cases are dismissed.  -- Commonwealth v. Cart Wilson, carrying concealed weapon"

Cart is listed on the 1920 Census in Smyth County, VA, age 77, a farmer, as Benjamin C. Wilson with his second wife, Elizabeth F. (Florence).  Some people have Cart's birthdate as December 25, 1842 (That is what is on his tombstone, and he was listed as being 77 in 1920 on the Census), however earlier Censuses (including the 1850 Census) show that he was born in 1844, not 1842.

Mary Jane BOWLING [Parents] was born 31 Jan 1846 in Tazewell Co., VA. She died after 1892. Mary married Benjamin Carter WILSON on Apr 1868. The marriage ended in divorce.

Mary left Cart in about 1891 according to Smyth County court records.  Cart had a child, Nannie, with another woman in 1885 (Nannie Maloyed was living with her father, Cart, and his second wife, Florence, in Smyth County, VA according to the 1900 Census).  It is unclear as to whether this is the reason she left him, however Cart was said to have been with other women during his marriage with Mary.  Divorce records state that she "deserted" him, as Cart was the one who filed for divorce.  The final divorce record states that she was living with another man in another state but does not elaborate.  Nobody seemed to know exactly where Mary went after she left her husband.  Her children generally indicated that Florence was their mother, as she and Cart married while some of them were still living at home.
