John was born in Smyth County, VA to B. C. Wilson and Mary Jane Bowling Wilson. They divorced when he was about 14. He listed his birthdate as January 1, 1877 in a journal he kept. His death certificate states that he was born on January 1, 1878, however in checking Smyth County birth records and the 1880 Census, John was born in 1877.

His grandchildren called him "Paw Wilson." His WWII draft card described him as being 5'8" and 152 pounds with grey hair and blue eyes. At that time he was employed by Field Scott as a coal miner. He also worked as a stone mason, and he built the wall in front of Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Tazewell County, VA, which was still standing as of 2006.

His death certificate states that he died suddenly in 1949 of "an apparent coronary occlusion" at the age of 72. Heart disease was common in the Wilson family, as it claimed the lives of several of John's brothers, nieces and nephews at much earlier ages than John.

RICHLANDS, VA -- Mr. Jerry Ray Addison, 50, of 113 Franklin Avenue, Richlands, passed away Feb. 5, 2006 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Richlands and was a son of Peggy Wilson Addison of Richlands and the late Earl Addison Jr. He was a retired coal miner having worked for Island Creek Coal Company V.P.3. He was a lifelong resident of Richlands and attended Church of the Living God in Jesus Name at Doran, Va.

Survivors in addition to his mother are: Two sisters: Mrs. Becky Jackson and daughter, Amanda of Richlands, Mrs. Rita Boyd and husband, Iles of Raven, Va.; three brothers: David Lee Addison and wife, Darlene of Richlands, Virginia, Bobby Wayne Addison and wife, Sherri of Richlands, James P. Addison and wife, Nancy of Madison, WV; two aunts: Dorothy Horn, Patsy Allison and husband, Scotty; one great-aunt: Hazel Brown; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Jerry Ray Addison will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Kenny Pruitt officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
