Mary Elizabeth NEWBERRY "W. L." was born 1866 in Virginia. She died after 1930. W. L. married Charles Sherman WHITED on 28 Jan 1902 in Russell Co., VA.

Mary Elizabeth (1910 Census she is listed as Mary E. Whited, 1920 she is Elizabeth Whited, 1930 she is Mary again) was not truly a Newberry, but it is unclear what her maiden name was. She was listed as W. L. Newberry with no parents mentioned on the marriage record (which apparently had problems in itself). This was Charles' second marriage, but it was Mary's third according to the 1910 Census. She was married to a Newberry second (and was listed as widowed on the 1900 Census), so they must have ended up putting the Newberry name down instead of her maiden name. A marriage record where a Newberry marries a Mary in Russell County during that time frame does not appear to be existent. The 1900 Census enumerator originally wrote down that she was married for 18 years, then he marked it out, because they generally didn't keep that data when the head of household was widowed. She would have been married in 1881 or 1882 according to that figure, though.

Elasy changed his name to Thomas C. Whited according to family sources. According to the 1910 Census, there was a grandson named Curtis, age 4, living in the household of Thomas and Celia Whited in Logan County, WV. This may have been Harriet's son, who was later known as Jack Whited Rothrock. By 1920, all the children had moved out of the household. In 1930, Thomas was living next door to hi daughter, Ada Callahan, in Logan Co., WV. His occupation was listed as "commissioner," and his employer was the United States according to that Census listing.
