Glen Lester PHIPPS [Parents] "William" was born Aug 1889 in Buchanan Co., VA. He died. William married Mary Jane GREEN on 16 May 1911 in Richlands, Tazewell Co., VA.
Glen's World War I draft registration card lists him as an inmate in the "Va. Penetentiary." He was incarcerated in 1920 according to the Census in Dinwiddie County, VA. According to family, Glen was set up by his wife, Mary, in a plot which would later cause him to kill one of her cousins. He went to prison for the killing and became a trustee, which allowed him to leave the prison from time to time to get wood to make banjos and fiddles. While in prison, Mary left with the children and went to California. Glen walked away from the prison one day and went to California to find his family, but was not allowed to see them by their mother. He left a note at his daughter's house saying he was passing through and that "by way of introduction," he was William Phipps, late of Indiana. His granddaughter, Nancy Phipps Bepler, did some research on him and concluded that Glen may very well have changed his name to William and moved to Plantation, Indiana from Social Security information she was able to find.

Mary Jane GREEN was born 1890 in Tazewell Co., VA. She died. Mary married Glen Lester PHIPPS on 16 May 1911 in Richlands, Tazewell Co., VA.

After Glen was incarcerated for a couple of years, he and Mary divorced. She moved to California and married William H. Vancleaf in about 1920. There was a Mary J. Phipps listed as having died December 5, 1960 in Lake County, CA. She was born January 6, 1891 in Virginia. Her mother's maiden name was Music(k) according to the death record. It's unclear as to whether this is the same Mary who married Glen Phipps. If so, then perhaps she and William Vancleaf weren't actually married.
