He was a coal miner, having retired in 1981.  Iles always preferred working third shift instead of day shift.  He enjoyed talking on the CB.  His handle was "Pop."  He was an avid Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics fan.

Graham Tolbert BOYD [Parents] was born 14 Jan 1910 in Raven, Russell Co., VA. He died 15 Apr 1991 in Bristol Regional Hospital, Bristol, Sullivan Co., TN and was buried in Green Hills Memory Gardens, Tazewell Co., VA. Graham married Lucy Ellen WHITED on 14 Jun 1936 in Clyde Church's home, Swords Creek, Russell Co., VA.

Graham grew up in a very demanding environment.  He was expected to work at a very young age.  It has been told that he began work in the coal mines at about the age of 12, often being hidden by other workers when the federal government began inspecting mines.

After his mother died in 1936, Graham and his wife Lucy raised his brother Dallas, who was 19 years younger than Graham.

Although he quit school in the 8th grade, Graham was a very intelligent man, especially in the subject of mathematics.  He loved farming, and he enjoyed collecting guns and knives.  He used to go squirrel hunting occasionally.  He worked actively raising vegetables in his garden until he was in his late 70's.

Graham was known as a very giving man, as he would often loan or give money to people he barely knew, if even at all.

Politics was something of great interest to Graham.  One would have to look very far to find someone who supported the Democratic party as much as he did.  Every year when it was approaching Election Day, he tacked up as many posters promoting local, state and national Democratic candidates up for election.  His favorite President was Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  In fact, he named one of his sons Delano Roosevelt Boyd in honor of the 32nd U. S. President.

He had a wry sense of humor, which was often misunderstood by younger generations.  At times, he could seem dead serious when offering a word of criticism...only to be jokingly trying to get a rise out of someone!  At times it was difficult to ascertain whether he was being serious or whether his comments were in jest.

He also had a language that seemed to be one of his own.  Some of his trademark expressions included:

"Keep yer change, you got a hole in yer pocket" instead of "you're welcome,"

"Big yellow goose" when referring to a school bus, and

"Sam Jones" was the devil, i.e., "Sam Jones'll get you for lyin'!"

Another very positive trait Graham possessed was his outstanding work ethic.  He always tried to teach his family the need to work hard to make something of life.  He also preached and practiced prudence in savings, saying "save that for a rainy day."

He was usually in bed by 8 PM unless there was a good baseball game on the radio or TV...the Detroit Tigers were his favorite baseball team.  He was awake by about 5 AM to get his early breakfast of Corn Flakes with the morning newspaper and Channel 5 morning news.  When it was daylight, it was time to work the garden.

He became active in the Primitive Baptist church in his late 60's or early 70's, being faithful to attend each Sunday morning.  He was an active member of the Richlands Senior Citizens, and held a lifetime membership to the Red Men Oniska Tribe No. 61 in Richlands, Virginia, taking an active part in the lodge's duties.  He enjoyed attending the annual state convention.

Graham was well known and respected by everyone who knew him.  Years after his death in 1991, many people still remember him as a friendly man who sat nearly every afternoon on his front porch throwing up his hand to every passerby on the highway in front of his home.

Lucy Ellen WHITED [Parents] was born 5 Apr 1911 in Blackford, Russell Co., VA. She died 26 Feb 2004 in Swords Creek, Russell Co., VA and was buried in Green Hills Memory Gardens, Tazewell Co., VA. Lucy married Graham Tolbert BOYD on 14 Jun 1936 in Clyde Church's home, Swords Creek, Russell Co., VA.

Other marriages:
BOYD, John Robert

Lucy lived with her grandparents Patton and Cerilda Casey until she was of age.  Her mother, Nannie, died when Lucy was a young child.  Her father, Felix, married again in about 1921 and left Burkley, Glen and her with Cerilda, as Patton had died prior to that.  She had two children, Mary and Perry, with her first husband, Bob Boyd.  According to story, she left Bob because his mother (who lived in the house with them) was overbearing and impossible to get along with.  They divorced on November 25, 1935, and Lucy married Graham Tolbert Boyd after a court-ordered 6 month waiting period.

Lucy was a generous woman of great integrity, and she always had a great sense of humor.  Her favorite activities included church, cooking, quilting and sewing.  It was common to hear her whistling or humming a favorite hymn while working around the house.
