Sparrel Henry BOYD [Parents] was born 10 Feb 1854 in New Garden, Russell Co., VA. He died Bet Jul 1911-1917 in Russell Co., VA. Sparrel married Isabel Jane BELCHER on 19 Aug 1873 in Samuel Belcher's home, Russell Co., VA.

Sparrel was counted in a census 12 Jun 1900 in Swords Creek, New Garden, Russell Co., VA.

Sparrel was a fairly tall and slender man.

He made liquor legally for the government in the late 1800's.  He began to sell some of his moonshine without stamps (untaxed) and eventually got caught by the authorities, according to his son, Harrison.  It is unclear what penalty was imposed by the federal government.  There is no record of this in Russell County court.  On April 30, 1892, Sparrel and Isabel borrowed $400 for one year at 6% interest from Reuben Sparks.  They put up their 80-acre property (given to them by Sparrel's father, John H. Boyd on December 3, 1874) as collateral for the loan.  It seems likely that Sparrel was fined for his illegal enterprise and had to borrow money to pay his fine.

On August 15, 1895 Sparks received a judgement against the Boyds for $400 plus interest and court costs.  The judge ordered the sale of the aforementioned property.  On March 4, 1896 the land was deeded and recorded to Reuben Sparks rather than be sold.

Isabel bought property on Stone Mountain (the homeplace about a mile up Horton Ridge in Russell County) in 1896 from H. C. Stuart and wife.  The property was recorded in Isabela's name to keep the government from taking it to pay any past outstanding or future penalties resulting from Sparrel's prosecution.  Sparrel and Isabel's children paid off the remaining balance owed on the land upon her death in 1905.

Sparrel was last seen on the Census in 1910 in Russell County, VA.  A newspaper article in the Tazewell Republican dated July 13, 1911 mentioned that "John H. Boyd, of this place (Big Lick), spent Sunday with his father on Mill Creek."  His son, Harrison, indicated that he had no children or parents to care for on his World War I draft registration card on June 5, 1917.  Sparrel must have died between July, 1911 and June 5, 1917.

Isabel Jane BELCHER [Parents] "Isabela" was born about 1851 in New Garden, Russell Co., VA. She died 1 about 1905 in Russell Co., VA. Isabela married Sparrel Henry BOYD on 19 Aug 1873 in Samuel Belcher's home, Russell Co., VA.

Isabela was counted in a census 12 Jun 1900 in Swords Creek, New Garden, Russell Co., VA.

Isabel and Sparrel were married at her father's home in Swords Creek.  She was a "stout" woman in stature.  According to court land records, Isabela died around 1905.  Very little else has been recorded about her.

They had the following children:

M i George Henry BOYD was born 11 Jun 1874 and died 1934.
  F ii
Mary Ann BOYD was born Aug 1875 in Russell Co., VA. She died Bet 1900-1910 in Horton Ridge, Russell Co., VA.

Mary Ann burned to death after she caught fire while washing bed clothes.  She was consumed with the flames and died before anyone could extinguish them.  She never married.
  F iii
Lucinda Elizabeth BOYD "Cindy" was born Feb 1877 in Russell Co., VA. She died Bet 1930-1937 in Horton Ridge, Russell Co., VA.

Lucinda never married.  She was a "full figured" woman who enjoyed collecting hats and spending time with her nieces and nephews.
M iv John Henry BOYD was born 30 Dec 1878 and died 15 Mar 1959.
F v Martha Matilda BOYD was born Sep 1881 and died after 1945.
M vi Robert Lee BOYD was born 4 May 1883 and died 22 Jun 1948.
M vii Alexander Elkanah BOYD was born 12 Mar 1885 and died 19 Apr 1943.
  M viii
Joseph Harrison BOYD "Harrison" was born 17 Apr 1887 in Russell Co., VA. He died about May 1944 in Horton Ridge, Russell Co., VA and was buried in Boyd Cemetery on mountain above old homeplace, Horton Ridge, Russell Co., VA.

Harrison never married.  It has been told that he had a great sense of humor and liked to make others laugh.  Harrison was well-loved by his nieces and nephews, however he didn't want to be called "Uncle Harrison," rather simply "Harrison."  He enjoyed listening to the Cincinnati Reds baseball games on his battery operated radio.  He was an overseas veteran of World War I, returning to the states in 1918, and he had an avid interest in World War II.  He died of cancer approximately a month or so before Germany surrendered to the Allied forces in 1944.

Family members have said that Harrison resembled his mother, Isabela, in appearance.  His WWII draft card described him as being 5'11", 214 lbs. with grey hair and brown eyes.
