George Butts

GEORGE BUTTS (BUTZ) was born January 11, 1792 1   Hamilton township, Northampton Co. Pennsylvania2. He was baptized at Hamilton twp. Union Church in Northampton Co. Pennsylvania on March 25, 1792. The sponsors of his baptism were GEORGE KELLER and CATHARINA EMMERICH.1 GEORGE BUTTS died July 04, 1867 in Park, St. Joseph, Michigan3. He is buried in Center Park Cemetery, Park, Michigan4.  GEORGE was the son of MICHAEL BUTZ and CATHARINA KELLER.

GEORGE married (1) MARY WEAVER5 Bet. 1810 - 1817 probably in Pennsylvania. She was born Bet. 1790 - 1800 probably in Lower Mount Bethel township, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of MOSES WEAVER and ELIZABETH OR MARGARET OR SARAH JOHNSON.6 MARY died in probably between May and July 1826 (before George's second marriage) in New Jersey or Pennsylvania.

EORGE married (2) SARAH VAN HORN on August 12, 1826 in Sussex Co. New Jersey7, daughter of CORNELIUS VAN HORN and HANNAH?8. SARAH was born March 27, 1797 in New Jersey9. She died November 05, 1874 in Schoolcraft, St. Joseph Co., Michigan10 and is buried in Center Park Cemetery, Park, Michigan4.

Children of GEORGE BUTTS and MARY WEAVER are:

i. MARGARET BUTTS, . b. around 1817. m. JOSHUA WORRELL. between 1840-1842, probaby in Niagara Co. New York. (She was living in Niagara Co. New York in 1867, when her father George died.11 ) She died between 1867 and 1870. Her husband,  Joshua Worrell was b. 1807 in Vermont. They had children: Henry, Theodore, Mary, Emma, and Ella--all born in Niagara Co. New York. In 1850, they lived in Lockport, Niagara Co. New York. In 1860, they lived in Cambria, Niagara Co. New York. In 1870, Cambria twp., Niagara Co. New York,  Joshua was 61 and daughters Mary age 23 and Ella age 7 were living with him. He was still alive in 1880, and the relationships of Mary and Ella are recorded in that census as his daughters.)

iv. SARAH JANE BUTTS, b. 182120, unknown location; d. Bef. May 10, 1845?21; m. LEVI O SPAFFORD, on  August 04, 1844, Van Buren Co, MI22.   LEVI O SPAFFORD was probably b. 1820; d. April 28, 1862, Evansville, Indiana23.

vii. THEODORE BUTTS, b.1826 (probably between May-July), Pennsylvania. Died? between 1851-1867?. (Living with George and Sarah in 1850 census29; Not found on any subsequent census or record; Not listed in "heirs at law" of father George's estate.)

George married Sarah Van Horn in Sussex Co. New Jersey on August 12, 1826. I have not found them in the 1830 census anywhere (PA, NY, NJ, or MI). In 1838, they were living in Niagara Co. New York.30 In the 1840 census, they were living in Cambria twp., Niagara Co. New York.31 By July 2, 1842, they were living  in Van Buren Co. Michigan (when George's daughter, Mary Ann Butts, married John Jacob Tittle27).

21. Although not fully proven, it appears that prior to May 1845, Sarah Jane Butts Spafford had died and her widower, Levi O. Spafford, married Eliza Tittle in Cass Co. Michigan.

22. Van Buren Co. Michigan Marriage book A page 31: August 4, 1844, at the house of George Butts in the township of Antwerp Co aforesaid [Van Buren], Levi O. Spafford of Lafayette age 27 and Sarah Jane Butts of Antwerp aged 23 years.

23. Although it is not proven to be the same Levi O. Spafford, according to the American Civil War Soldiers database on Ancestry.com, a Levi O. Spafford died in Evansville, Indiana on April 28, 1862.

24. Mary Ann Butts is listed in the probate record of her father George. See endnote #11.

25. 1850 Porter twp. Van Buren Co. Michigan census page 338: Mary A. Tittle lists birthplace as Pennsylvania. However, in 1860 Union twp (Troy post office) Davis Co. Iowa: Mary A. Tittle (indexed as Little) lists birthplace as New York.

26. 1880 Lincoln twp., Republic Co. Kansas census: Mary A. Tittle living with son George W. Tittle. I could not find her in the 1900 census and am assuming she died between 1880-1900. The Republic Co. Kansas County Clerk has no record of her death. (Source: Letter to Tracey Marcelo from Republic Co. Kansas County Clerk dated August 29, 2002.)

27. Van Buren Co. Michigan Marriage book A page 18: July 2, 1842, in the town of Antwerp, Co. Van Buren, State of Michigan, John Tittle age 26 years and Mary Ann Butts of Antwerp aged 19 years were joined in marriage in the presence of Jacob Tittle and Thomas Alexander of Decatur, Co. aforesaid.

28. John Tittle is in the 1870 Union twp. Troy post office Davis Co. Iowa census. He is not in the 1880 census. I am assuming he died in either Iowa or Kansas between 1870-1880.

32. Pioneer Society of Michigan Vol. 4 pg. 234: JACOB B. BUTTS, who died at his home in Milton, March 22, 1880, had been a respected resident of this county for upwards of thirty-five years. He was born in Pennsylvania, June 5, 1827, His widow, a daughter of Peter Truitt, and several children survive him. (Note: Because of his birth date, he must be the first child born to Sarah Van Horn and George Butts.)

(Note: John P. Barker is the brother of Eleanor Barker who was married to Henry W. Butts.)

39. Elizabeth is mentioned in her father's probate as "Elizabeth Huffman." According to the 1860 Park twp. St. Joseph Co. census page 521, Elizabeth was the wife of John M. Huffman.
