Two persons representing the Overbrook attendance are were interviewed by the board. The two were Mrs. Cindy Marcell and Mrs. Wendy Ufford. Board President, Robert Cairnes, directed the interview process which took nearly 20 minutes for each candidate. Current board members asked numerous questions of each candidate and then gave deliberation to each. Dure to the strength of each candidate, the board exercised three ballots before casting an unanimous vote to appoint Mrs. Cindy Marcell for a term to expire on June 30, 1995. Mrs. Marcell will take a regular seat on the SFT board effective with the Sept. 12 meeting.
Cindy Marcell, with her husband Gerald, are residents of the rural Overbrook area. Their son Wayne is a third grader in the Santa Fe Schools. Board President Robert Cairnes, gave this assessment of the selection process: "The board is very grateful for the two persons who have stepped forward to serve the Santa Fe Trail school district. It is a good sign for the district when the board must make a very difficult decision to appoint only one person. Both Mrs. Marcell and Mrs. Ufford worked diligently to assist in the recent school bond issue and both have demonstrated strong support for the directions of the future."
In the remainder of the meeting...The Osage County Chronicle, Feb. 16, 1995

Paul was born the 2nd in a set of twin males at 8:00 am. Listed as the 9th living child of 10 on his birth certificate. He was a full blooded German. Worked as a Brick Mason as an adult. Said to have started school at Rouse (1/4 mile from home) then later went to the Zion Lutheran school where they walked 4 miles each way. Erick & Paul graduated from the Lutheran 8th grade but then they got in trouble at home for "messing" with their dad's tools so he sent them to Rouse school to repeat the 8th grade. Erick tells that they never opened a book in school that last year but the teacher passed them. That was their last year of schooling at age 14 as told by Erick Schulze to Cindy Marcell, 1999.Paul is consistently described by his brothers, nephews & nieces as the"strongest" brother of them all. He was about 6'1 of regular build. All the Schulze boys were exceptionally strong, but Paul was the one everyone sought to settle their "scores". Paul's middle name is spelled 5 different ways on legal documents. The birth certificate spells it Erhard, church baptism records says Ehrhardt, church confirmation records say Eberhard, Social Security application as written by Paul himself says Earheart, and death certificate says Earhart.

08 Aug 2001 I remember Renie as always laughing. The last time I saw her was about 33 years ago when she was in the Denver area. She had come to visit your family and was pleased to keep in touch with your mother even though Jimmy Ray was gone. My mother Audrey (Hoskins) brought Renie to my house one afternoon. My first born Brian was about 2. It was at that time that Renei said "You spend the first year of your kid's life trying to get him to walk and talk, and then the next 20 years trying to get him to sit down and shut up." I have used that quote a number of times since. Nancy Jo (Aughenbaugh) Allbee

Maggie & children pronounced the name Amasa as "Am a cie" for both spouse and son. Ruth tells how Maggie would get made when she went to pay the child support for Amasa and the clerk always argued with her on how to pronounce it.
Margaret "Maggie" Laverne Moody
Maggie was living with her daughter, Morean Hoskins Schulze, in Weston, MO at the time of her death. She was just 2 weeks short of her 84th birthday. She had lived in Weston for about a couple of years. Burial was at Mount Olive cemetery in Pittsburg, KS on Quincy St.
Maggie & Dan raised Elsie's child, Elzie, as their own. Only the older kids knew he was not one of their siblings. Ruth was close in age to Elgie and felt very strongly since he was raised as her brother he would still be considered a brother, no matter what the legal description was. Ruth told this to C Marcell in 2000.
From Heinrich Burmeister, notes to Cindy Marcell

Cindy Marcell has copies of documents from this museum showing both Christoph & Henry emigrated at the same time on different ships, courtesy of Heinrich Burmeister. Family stories passed down to Heinrich Burmeister reveal both Christoph and Henry returned to Germany, & Christoph married Henry's twin sister Marie Wilhelmine Schulze in 1887. Henry emigrated to America in abt 1897 with Pauline & Ernest where he remained till his death.Ship's Passenger List - Hamburg, Germany to New York, 9 October 1883

I have viewed a copy of the original handwriting for this ship's manifest. It is impossible to say what it says, I see Schw, the remainder is not legible to me, Cindy Marcell, 2004)
Notes by Cindy Marcell, "it is thought none of Henry & Pauline's kids knew about the prior relationship of Henry with Ms. Burmeister and the son from that relationship. It should be noted the parents never discussed Germany for the most part in front of their kids, hard to say why but this may be one of the reasons???. A man from Germany contacted me looking for a Heinrich Wilhelm Schulze (in Germany this would have been our Henry's given name) with the same date and place of birth that I had, he did not have access to any of my info at the time and my web site did not give it then, also I did not release anything till he gave me the names and birth dates, places, etc (I wanted to make sure we had a valid connection first). He knew Henry had came to America and it was Henry's 2nd trip, another unknown fact to their kids. Turns out the woman Henry first fathered a child with refused to come to America so he then went on & met Pauline, she was orphaned at the time and nothing to hold her back . She was willing to leave Germany in the future. They married and had Ernest before being able to make the trip to America. The other relationship was never mentioned in front of the kids to anyone's knowledge. However the birth place of Henry is not that big of a town and having the same name and birth date and affiliated with the correct (Lutheran) church I am sure it is our Henry, also many of Henry's children's names match up with this Henry's siblings names in Germany. Too many coincidences so I feel positive about the connection. I do not believe Henry and the first woman broke up on poor terms as it looks like he mailed her a photo of himself when visiting the US the first trip (when they were a couple) and she kept it for their child, Johann Heinrich Burmeister born 1890, who carried his mother's maiden name. This photo looks just like our Henry but younger."

Interview by Cindy Marcell, Feb., 2001 with Erick Schulze- "Dad was in the German army at one time, abt 1880's. I only overheard dad talk about it once." Erick reports there was a rumor that his dad came to America under his brother's name but he never heard his parents say that so he does not know it be true. We do know that Henry was abt. 30 when he arrived & Pauline abt. 21 years of age. Supposedly there was a picture at one time of Henry in the German services sitting astride a horse. Erick does not know who possesses this picture. From November 1917 to April 1918, all "alien enemies" were ordered to register with the U. S. Marshal in their county of residence, by order of the President. All of those aliens were any of those persons who had - for whatever reason - not been naturalized. These records are available at the Kansas State Historical Society and the National Archives Central Plains Region. KSHS has only film. The Archives have the originals as well as the film.
Beyond the very obvious the forms asked for: ship and arrival, children's names and birth dates - and in the case of females, which husband; parents name and address; siblings name and address; who was sympathetic to the enemy; full set of fingerprints; a photo and signature; a physical description (at least in the eyes of the person filling out the form); relatives serving in the enemy forces; occupation and employer. The files contained any request for change of residence - where they came from and where they wanted to move to.COUNTY CITY LAST NAME FIRST NAME MF DOB COUNTRY CITY ORIGIN MAIDEN NAME PHOTO

As a young & middle aged it is said that Henry could carry 100# sugar bag from town to the farm home, & he only weighed 150#. Described as a very quiet man, usually did not carry out much of discipline; however if he was mad he could be pretty severe with the discipline. Erick says growing up he was not aware that his father was a drinker; however after Henry's death Erick found bunches of empty alcohol containers hidden in the barn. He says he just was not aware of his dad's drinking, but he knew those bottles were not from his brothers. Unsure if Henry drank much before or if he started after the troubles with stomach cancer.

An orphan as a young adult, probably met Henry W. in Berlin during the war per recollections of Erick, She worked as a cook for a wealthy family in Germany about the time Henry met her, place or events unknown about their meeting. Her maiden name could be Rholloff?
I knew she spoke German from all family stories and it was assumed she was of German heritage. Recently I discovered the birthplace of Pauline to be Posen/Poznan Province, Germany formerly known as Poland. Now I know Poznan Province was originally in Poland, then taken over by Prussia, then became part of Germany! So you see her line is most likely Polish. I don't know if I will ever be able to identify her town of birth but at least I know know the region. Still it will be a needle in a haystack trying to find the town of birth. But it is much further than I was these past few years on this question! Cindy Schulze Marcell, 2003
Some history of Zion Lutheran church of Pittsburg, relevant to the Schulze family-
The church was built in 1877. In 1881 a parsonage was built. It was on S. Rousche St. with a part time minister. It moved to E. Washington and opened Dec 15, 1889. The old curch was used for Christian Day school and by 1895 they had a fulltime teacher there. In 1896 there were 72 kids attending and the building was found to be too small. A new school was built at this same site on S Rousche. It should be noted up until 1910 the church spoke/taught only German. Rev. O. Matuschka came in May 1910 and added English services one time per month; in 1917 it increased to 2 x/ mo. and later to full English when the law dictated it be done. In 1947 the old church was moved to Broadway & Jackson, to be used while a new one was being built on this site.

Erick recalls his mom as being the primary disciplinarian of the family. He said she was always hitting someone and would use anything. He recalled a beating with an item that was made out of wire being used on him once.Erick tells of the story when he and Arthur were young men at home. They had came across some barrels of moonshine when a friends distillery caught on fire and they were told to remove the evidence. They carried it on their backs and placed it in a pond for safe keeping. Over time they sold some and drank some. One night during some pranks of having fed the old rooster a bunch of it they found it dead the next morning. To avoid the wrath of their mother they concocted a plan. While their mom was making beds they snuck around the shed and took the dead rooster up to the road, laid it out on the ground and messed its feathers up pretty badly. Later in the day when Pauline wanted to walk Erick went with her up the road. There lay the dead rooster. His mom only complained that it looked like someone had hit it with their car. She never found out the truth on this one.
Must say after hearing various stories of the pranks these kids put their parents through it must have been a challenge to have been their parents.
Erick recalls that after his dad's death his mother went to Chicago with her cousin, Ben Roloff, who also came over from Poland. Ironically Ben & Pauline lived in the same town in the US, unknown to each other for a great many years until coincidentally meeting at a sick friend's house started them talking about Ben's last name. They then discovered they were cousins! This would have been in the 1930's that they found each other.

Will of Pauline-
The house that Pauline last owned was sold for $500.00 to William Schulze's wife, Hulda Holliger Schulze. The 5 room house with a physical description of land: lots 17,18,19, & 20 in block 4, in Schnackenberg's 1st Addition to East Pittsburg (now a part of Pittsburg, KS), Crawford Co., KS. was appraised at $600.00 but did not sell at this price. Reportedly there were no other offers and the $500 offer was the best to be had. William was functioning as the administrator of the estate of Pauline's, and was represented by attorney Guy VonSchriltz, the case was reviewed by Judge Robert Colborn. The 81 acres of land at NE quarter of nw quarter of sectn 3 in twnshp 33 of range 33, except 1 acre in south side described as follows; beginning 555 7/8 feet east of the sw corner of above described land; thence north 208 2/3 ft; thence east 208 2/3 f; thence south 208 2/3 ft; thence west 208 2/3 ft to the beginning, containing one acre of land. Also the 2 acres of land described as follows: commencing at the nw corner of the sw quarter of the ne quarter of sectn 3 in twnshp 33 of range 33; thence south 313 ft; thence east 313 ft; thence north 313 ft; thence west 313 ft the place of the beginning, containing 2 acres of land, all in Barton Co., MO = value of 81 acres at $1000.00 Personal property said to be valued at $1143.75 as of 9-7-1939. Funeral expenses at $354.20, hospital and doctor bills at 311.20+ 50+ 200 = $561.20. It should be noted that there was a claim by Henry Schulze, Jr. of $450.00 from a loan made to his mother prior to Nov. 1938. I do not know what the outcome was for this loan, it is known that what ever was remaining would be divided equally between the 11 surviving children. (CM has a copy of all documents refered to)

The Zion Lutheran Church, 102 W. Jackson, is celebrating its 125th year with festivities on July 21 and 22.
Zion church still strong after 125 years - Church will mark anniversary with festivities this weekend
By NIKKI PATRICK "Morning Sun Family Living Editor "
In 1876, German immigrants searching for a better life and freedom to worship as they pleased, formed a church in the new community of Pittsburg. Their congregation, Zion Lutheran Church, is still going strong after 125 years. The church will mark its anniversary with festivities July 21 and 22. "We're trying to contact all former members to invite them to the celebration, but it will also be open to the entire community," said Kathryn Richard, who is serving on the board organizing the observance. "You don't have to be Lutheran to come and share in our heritage."
The heritage is a proud one, reflecting courage and determination, said Les Grotheer, longtime member.
"For those people to come over from Germany at that time was about as big a thing as us going to the moon now," he said. "But when we send somebody to the moon, they're in constant radio contact. With them, they were out of touch with their families back home, until they could get over here and start writing letters back and forth."
Reunion activities will begin with a cookout from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 21 at the church activity center, with seating both indoors and outside, if weather permits. The menu will include bratwurst and hot dogs from the grill, barbecued beef and potato salad. Entertainment and games for children will be available.
The evening will close with a vesper service in the sanctuary with the Rev. Timothy Heupel, former vicar at Zion, delivering the sermon.
Morning worship will be held at 10:30 a.m. July 22 with a sermon by the Rev. Chris Schonberg, who pastored Zion from 1985 to 1989. A potluck dinner will follow at noon, with meat and beverages provided. Entertainment and fellowship will follow.
Afternoon worship will be at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Kim Scharff, former Zion vicar, delivering the sermon. Also assisting with this service will be the Rev. Galen Friedrichs, former Zion member who is now serving as vacancy pastor, Rev. Heupel and the Rev. Howeqrd Patten, Kansas District President, LCMS. After the service will be a light lunch and fellowship.
While the church and Pittsburg were both founded in 1876, the Lutheran presence in southeast Kansas started in 1869, when a group of Lutheran pioneer families -- including W.M. Minecey, H.G. Koopman, John Meyer, John Schnackenberg and J.H. Rodenburg -- came from Lafayette County, Mo., and settled on farms two miles east and south of Pittsburg in an area known as Iowa City.
"That's about where Random Acres is today," Grotheer said.
The families had no church, but were served in their homes by Lutheran pastors who rode in on horseback. Among them was the Rev. Julius F. Biltz, who founded St. Paul's College, Concordia, Mo.
However, the pioneers eventually decided they needed their own church. At a meeting on July 15, 1876, a constitution was drafted, adopted and the local congregation was formed. The formal name adopted was the Evangelical Lutheran Zion Congregation of the Unaltered Augsburg Confession of Baker Township, Crawford County, Kansas.
In the same year, a multi-purpose building was constructed on South Rouse, at the site of the current Zion Cemetery.
The new church didn't call its first resident pastor until 1880. He was the Rev. Henry Luecker, who served until retiring because of ill health in 1892. He died five days after tendering his resignation, and his funeral was held Sept. 18, 1892, at the church.
"We've had 14 pastors in 125 years, which isn't bad," Grotheer said. "We'll be calling our 15th."
In 1885 the church became a member of the Missouri Synod, and in 1889 built a new church at 908 E. Washington and used the old church building as a parochial school.
Linda Dunekack, who has been researching church history, said that in the past she interviewed some of the oldest members. "One 90-year-old lady remembered that many of the students had to walk to the Zion school, while others were driven to school in horse-drawn wagons," she said.
Older members also recalled other interesting things, she said, such as the fact that men and women were required to sit on opposite sides of the church. Children sat with their mothers, until the boys were old enough to go over to the men's side with their fathers.
According to church tradition, this stopped when a young woman of the congregation refused to be separated from her fiance and insisted on sitting next to him during services.
Services were also conducted in German for many years. "That practiced stopped around 1940 or 1941, around the time when World War II broke out," Grotheer said.
In 1947 the East Washington building was relocated to the current location at the corner of South Broadway and Jackson. The old church was remodeled to serve as a chapel, and ground was broken in 1953 for a new church, which was dedicated in 1954.
The former chapel continued to serve as an educational building until the centennial year of 1976, which a new activity center was constructed. The new center is connected to the church by a covered passageway, and there is a tower housing the bell that the church obtained from the Pittsburg School Board in 1905. Men of the church hauled the bell, in a large farm wagon pulled by horses, from its first home, South School at 205 S. Locust, to the old church on East Washington.
In its current location, members believe, the bell serves to unite the activity center and the church, as well as the church of the past with the church of the future.
On Oct. 14, during the weekend of the Pittsburg State University Homecoming, Zion will host a mission festival. "This will give people who weren't able to attend our main celebration in July an opportunity to come to smaller observance," Richard said.
There are also tentative plans to have an old-fashioned children's Christmas service. "That might be a very nice way to conclude our anniversary year," Dunekack said.Posen/Poznan Province, Germany formerly known as Poland
I knew Anna Pauline Roloff Schulze (1875) spoke German from all family stories and it was assumed she was of German heritage. Recently I discovered the birth place of Pauline to be Posen/Poznan Province, Germany formerly known as Poland. Now I know Poznan Province was originally in Poland, then taken over by Prussia, then became part of Germany! So you see her line most likely is Polish. I don't know if I will ever be able to identify her town of birth but at least I know know the region. Still it will be a needle in a haystack trying to find the town of birth. But it is much further than I was these past few years on this question! Cindy Schulze Marcell, 2003
I feel I have exhausted all options under Pauline's immediate descendants to learn more of this line so I have decided to investigate through Pauline's cousins Ben, Martha & Mary Roloff branches to see if I can learn more about the history of Roloff's in Poland. Cindy Marcell, Nov. 2004
