Ujest-Ujazd

The small town of Ujest, located on the River Klodnitz was officially declared a 'town' by Bishop Lorenz from Breslau, in 1223. This Declaration from 1223 is one of the oldest hand-written Documents in existence. Before World War II there were approximately 2,100 inhabitants in Ujest, most of them of the catholic faith.The area around Ujest, in the County of Gr.Strehlitz, was renamed on March 9,1936 to "Bishop's Valley". In the last months of WWII a lot of damage was done to the buildings around the Central Square, the Market Place. Almost all of them have been rebuild in recent years.Since 1945 it is called Ujazd. In this small Village, my Grandparents, JOHANNES KMITTA and HELENE MARIA ANNA KMITTA,nee RIEGER settled for nearly 3 years. Johannes was a Teacher there in the early 1920s. Although not a used as a School any more, the House is still standing today behind the St.Andreas Church, the Church my Mother was baptized in.

Die Oberschlesische Kleinstadt Ujest liegt am rechten Ufer der Klodnitz. 1223 wurde dieser Ort vom Breslauer Bischof Lorenz zur Stadt nach Neumarkter Recht erhoben. Die Urkunde von 1223 ist das aelteste Schriftzeugnis fuer die Siedlungstaetigkeit der Breslauer Bischoefe. Vor dem 2.Welt Krieg waren ungefaehr 2,100 Einwohner in Ujest, haupsaechlich katolischen Glaubens. Heute sind es knapp 2,000.Die Gegend um Ujest, Kreis Gross Strehlitz, wurde am 9.Maerz 1936 "Bischof's Tal" genannt. Die letzten Monaten des 2.Welt Krieges brachten viel Zerstoerung in diesem kleinen Ort. Saemtliche Gebeude um den Markt Platz herum wurden durch Bomben und Feuer vernichtet. Fast alle sind neu aufgebaut worden und seit 1945 wird dieser Ort Ujazd genannt. Meine Gross-Eltern, JOHANNES KMITTA und HELENE MARIA ANNA KMITTA,geb. RIEGER, lebten ungefeahr 3 Jahre in Ujest. Johannes war dort Lehrer von ungefaehr 1920 bis 1922. Obwohl das Gebeude heute nicht mehr als Schule genutzt wird, steht es noch immer unbeschaedigt hinter der St.Andreas Kirche, die Kirche in der meine Mutter getauft wurde.
