Neustadt-Prudnik

The City was founded some time between 1260 and 1300. It's founders were Subjects of the Bohemian Count Ottokar,II.In many of the Buildings around the Market Place, especially the Marien Column and the Fountain, the Baroc style of architecture is evident. The earliest industry here was the weaving of cloth and the making of yarn. But Neustadt was also known for its Shoe Manufacturing Industry. But most importantly to it's economic growth was the weaving of fine Linens and Damast by the world renown Factory of S.Fraenkel. It was in this lovely, old City that on May 16,1888 my Grandfather, JOHANNES KMITTA was born, to THOMAS KMITTA and his wife JOHANNA ANNA, nee HILLER. And on May 20,1888 Johannes was baptized in the Catholic Church St.Michael Arch Angel.My Grandfather died on February 14,1945 in Dresden, reason was given: 'exhaustion from the flight out of Silesia to the West'. This Church which has burned several times over the years and always was rebuild, is still standing, when I visited there in 1999. My Hiller Family came from JASSEN, a small town of 420 inhabitants in 1939, belonging to the city of Neustadt.

Die Erbauung der Stadt und Burg fiel zwischen den Jahren 1260 und 1300. Die Gruender von Neustadt waren Untertanen des Boehmer Herzogs Ottkar II. Bei den Gebaeuden, besonders am Ring Platz, war der Barockstil vorherrschend. Die Mariensaeule und der Barockbrunnen gaben der Stadtmitte die eigene Note. Von frueh an waren das Weberhandwerk und der Garnhandel hier zu finden. Aber hauptsaechlich kann man das ansaessige Wirtschaftleben der weltbekannten Firma S.Fraenkel mit ihrer ausgezeichneten Qualitaet der Leinen- und Damastweberei verdanken. Und in dieser schoenen,alten Stadt wurde am 16.Mai 1888 mein Grossvater, JOHANNES KMITTA geboren zu THOMAS KMITTA und seiner Frau ANNA, geb. HILLER. Am 20.Mai 1888 wurde Johannes in der katolischen Kirche, St.Michael Erzengel getauft. Er starb am 14.Februar 1945 in Dresden, vor Erschoepfung in Folge der Flucht nach dem Westen. Durch die Jahrzehnte hinweg hatte diese Kirche schon ein paarmal gebrannt, und immer wieder wurde sie neu erbaut. Und so steht sie heute noch, als ich Neustadt in 1999 besuchte. Meine HILLER Familie kam aus dem kleinen Ort Jassen, Kreis Neustadt, das im Jahre 1939 420 Einwohner hatte.
