St. Mary's Parish Church at Wirksworth

This was where almost all of the Byard families who had settled in the area in Ashleyhay and Alderwasley in the 17thC. were baptised, married and buried.

 Broadgates Farm at Alderwasley

This farm, which remains a working farm as the photograph shows first came into the Byard family in about 1750. It was here that Thomas (1754-1811) and Lydia lived.

 The Bent Alderwasley

The top picture shows part of The Bent as it is today, and the lower picture is of a country lane near The Bent, a country scene which is probably not much different from that seen by folk who lived in the area in the 18th.C.

This was also a farm occupied the Byards for several generations, from the late 17th C. up to the 20th C.

The Bent later became a chapel.

The Bent and Broadgates are within a mile or so of each other.

 The Bear Inn Alderwasley

It was at a fight outside this Inn that Robert Byard was killed in 1822. At that time Robert's brother William was the licensee.

 Carr House Farm, Wingerworth

This farm was once owned by William Byard (1866-1931).

The photograph shows William Byard, his wife Sarah and their adopted daughter Winifred. After William died the farm passed into the hands of Frank Wilmot (previously a farmhand) who had married Winifred.

The Royal Oak at Old Brampton

Tom Byard was licensee of The Royal Oak in the early part of the 20C.

The photograph shows Tom Byard with two of his children, Elsie and Alfred Byard.

This is a daguerreotype of Anthony Spencer, the father of Mary Elizabeth Spencer who married Joshua Byard. Anthony lived most of the time with Mary and Joshua but would often visit his sons in Pennsylvania. He is buried at Burlington Pennsylvania.
