John Odom was the son of Malachi and Mary Odom. He was born in 1802 and
died in 1836. He died when he was 34. He was in bed with the measles,
but got out of bed to take corn fodder in a shower of rain and the effects
of the exposure killed him. His widow, Mary, is listed as a widow in
the census records of 1840. Mary later married Trippe Pope and continued
to live in Lauderdale, Mississippi. Lauderdale marriage records, Book A,
page 39, December 25, 1844. He was said to be Irish and very husky.
Mary Copeland had a brother,
Rip Copeland, who fought in the Civil War.
The 1880 census shows Mary & Elizabeth
still living at home. At this time, Mary was 69 and Elizabeth was 38.
It also shows that Elizabeth had breast cancer.
