GEORGE HASTEN
1871-1891

The Republican
Carthage, Illinois
June 17, 1891
(excerpted from Chat's Webster column)

Died June 9th, George Hasten, aged 19 years six months 16 days.  George was a quiet, inoffensive, and industrious boy.  He was looked upon by his little brothers and sisters as a strong support in time of need.  He first began ailing in February and come home from his work "to rest"
He grew worse for a time and then become better, yet he gradually began to decline, until he "fell asleep."  At times he suffered excruciating misery, yet never a word of complaint ever escaped his lips.  When we think how patiently he bore his sufferings, and how considerate he was as regards others feelings, we feel sure a rich reward awaited his coming.  Funeral services were held at the church on Wednesday, at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. Bruce.  Many and beautiful were the floral offerings contributed by his lady schoolmates.

Gone to the grave is our loved one,
  Gone with a youthful bloom.
Lowly we bend, schoolmate and friend,
And follow him to the tomb.

Oft we have mingled together.
Oft the same story have read.
Sad tho we be, fondly will we,
Cherish the name of the dead.

The family and relatives desire to return their heartfelt thanks to all the friends who so kindly remembred their dear departed one, during his long illness and death; and to his schoolmates for the beautiful floral gifts.

(This is a verbatim transcription.)
