WILLIAM J. KLECKNER ca. 1859-1937

William J. Kleckner was born in Union County, Pennsylvania, the son of Anna Callihan and William Kleckner.  Clara Belle Kinney was born November 27, 1864, in Hancock County, Illinois, to John Kinney and Emeline Yetter.

William and Clara were second cousins through the Callihan line.  They were married on July 24, 1884.  J. Conrad Kuhl, Minister of the Gospel, performed the ceremony at his home in Carthage. Witnesses were Miss Hattie Reinach and Abbie Kuhl.  Marriage Documents

Their fifty-third wedding anniversay was marked by a family celebration in 1937.

HANCOCK COUNTY RESIDENTS MARRIED FIFTY-THREE YEARS

Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Kleckner Had Anniversary Saturday
and Celebrated With Their Children At Home On Sunday

Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Kleckner, who live on Route 3 out of Carthage, celebrated their fifty-third wedding anniversary Saturday.  In honor of the event a dinner was served at their home Sunday, attended by their children and their families.

Mr. Kleckner is seventy-eight years old.  He was born in Pennsylvania.  Mrs. Kleckner is seventy-three years old.  She is a native of Hancock county, and was born in the Webster vicinity.

They were married July 24, 1884, at Carthage. The Rev. Conrad Kuhl, pastor of the German Lutheran church of Carthage at that time, performed the ceremony.

A daughter, Mrs. Emma Seibert, of Fountain Green, died three years ago. Their other children are Mrs. Ray Hobart, of Danville, Mrs. Stella Hainline of Webster, Bernard Kleckner of Hancock township, Otto Kleckner and William Kleckner at home, and Mrs. Ray Carter of Hannibal, and they also have sixteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Mr. and Mrs. Kleckner are among the best known residents of eastern Hancock county. Their long and useful life has gained for them the respect and admiration of the entire community.

Clara died at home on the Kleckner farm near Webster, on February 23, 1949, and was buried at Moss Ridge Cemetery.  Obituary

William and Clara were the parents of eight children:

i. Otto Kleckner, born October 11, 1884, near Burnside in Hancock County.  He died December 29, 1957, in Carthage, Hancock County, and was buried at Moss Ridge Cemetery at Carthage.
 
ii. Mabel M. Kleckner, born September 22, 1887 (date calculated from tombstone inscription), near Burnside.  She died September 5, 1888, and was buried at the Yetter Cemetery in Hancock County.
 
iii. Eva Kleckner, born April 3, 1889, near Burnside.  She died September 24, 1979, at Carthage, burial at Moss Ridge Cemetery.
 
iv. Hazel Kleckner, born June 7, 1891, near Burnside, died August 13, 1974, at Burlington, Iowa.  Burial at Moss Ridge Cemetery.  She married Joseph Ray Hobart, son of Joseph N. Hobart and Eva E. Wright.
 
v. Emma Kleckner, born November 12, 1893, in Hancock County, on the Kleckner farm southwest of Webster.  She died from typhoid fever on December 15, 1934, in Fountain Green Township. Burial at McConnell Geddes Cemetery in Fountain Green Township.
 
vi. Bernard Kleckner, born March 15, 1898, on the Kleckner farm.  He died September 27, 1972, in Carthage, burial at the South Cemetery in Basco, Hancock County.
 
vii. Lola Kleckner, born about 1901 on the Kleckner farm southwest of Webster.  She first married Reuben Ray Long, on May 22, 1920, at Carthage; they lived in Hancock County. She later married Roy Carter and lived in Davenport, Iowa, and Hannibal, Missouri.  Lola died after February 23, 1949.
 
viii. William F. Kleckner, born about 1906 on the Kleckner farm southwest of Webster.  He died after February 23, 1949.

From the Webster columm:  Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Cleckner [sic] celebrated their tin wedding on the 24th.  About 60 of their friends met at their home in the daytime, and about 80 young people ate ice cream at night.  A jolly good time is reported.  There are several other surprises on the docket for this week, by we promised not to tell yet.
