EDMOND S. SAMMONS 1860-1930
E. MARY SENNETT ca. 1866-1903

Thanks to Mary Jane White for contributing Sammons family data.

Edmond S. Sammons, son of James Sammons and Sarah Ellen Way, was born October 11, 1860, on the Sammons homestead south of Joetta, Hancock County, Illinois.  He died December 18, 1930, at the home of Emma and Mary Furchtbar in Joetta, Hancock County, Illinois.  In Sammons family records, his burial location was recorded as the Willis Cemetery, just south of Joetta, but there is no further evidence of that.

Edmond married Mary Sennett on July 9, 1884, at Macomb, McDonough County Illinois.  On the Board of Health document that accompanied their marriage license, the signature reads E. Mary Sennett; it is unclear whether or not Mary actually signed the document herself.
Marriage documents

Born in New York about 1866, she was the daughter of John and Anna Sennett, both of whom immigrated to the United States from Ireland.  Also from the Board of Health document, Anna Sennett's maiden name was recorded as Monihan.  On the Board of Health document for Mary's sister, Catharine, Anna's maiden name looks like Mulliha_?_.

Mary died on June 2 or 3, 1903, leaving Ed with five young children to raise.

Ed was a remarkably good storyteller, a faculty he inherited from his father.  He never drew on his imagination for material; he observed and remembered the amusing and strange incidents of a lifetime.  He was an artist at relating them.

Ed may have enjoyed telling the following story to those who gathered at the Weakley store for a chaw and a visit.

After the Sammons daughters were married and had their own homes, they still periodically went to their widowed father's house to cook and clean for him.  As in most kitchens of that era, they kept a can of drippings at the back of the stove.  One day, by accident, one of the daughters grabbed a tin of soap instead of the drippings and poured some into the food she was preparing.  Ed sat down to his meal.  What happened then?  "Well," the daughter later related, dryly, "Pappy always ate like a hog....."  There was some wild racing around the room, with Ed hollering, "I've been pizened!!  Pizened!!"

The children of Edmond Sammons and Mary Sennett were:

i. Lena Sammons, born January 25, 1886, in Hancock County, Illinois, died July 27, 1961, at LaHarpe, Hancock County.  Burial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Colchester, McDonough County.

ii. Arthur Sammons, born about 1888, died after April 15, 1910.

iii. Margaret Irene Sammons, born in 1889, died in 1963, burial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Colchester.  She married William E. Sargent (born about 1883 in Illinois, died after April 1, 1930; son of William H. Sargent).  They lived in Illinois, Minnesota and Missouri; residing in Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois, in 1930.  Five known children: Horace, Louise, Kenneth, Zelma and Walter (1920-2004).

Irene later married a man whose surname was Boyd.

iv. Damon Sammons, born May 17, 1891, in McDonough County, Illinois, in or near the village of Tennessee.  He died after June 5, 1917.

v. Ralph Sammons, born about 1900 in Illinois, died after April 15, 1910.

vi. Unnamed infant, stillborn or died at birth.
