RUTH E. SAMMONS
ca. 1865 - 1947

A cabinet card image of Ruth Sammons as a young woman. FOR DISPLAY ON THIS WEBSITE ONLY.

Ruth E. Sammons was the daughter of
James Sammons and Sarah Ellen Way.  She was born about 1865, probably on the Sammons homestead south of Joetta, Hancock County, Illinois.

Ruth married William Otterbein Dunham on April 22, 1889.  They had two children before divorcing before, apparently, June 1, 1900.

The son of Joshua Dunham and Matilda Nelson, William was born in Pike County, Illinois.  The date of birth on his tombstone at Glade City Cemetery, Blandinsville, McDonough County, Illinois, is September 21, 1851, although other records strongly suggest that he was born two or three years later.  He died May 16, 1922, and was buried next to his first wife.

In 1900, Ruth was located in St. Mary's Township, Hancock County, with her two children, Chloe and Harley.  Also in Ruth's home at that time was her uncle, Charles Kimball Way.

In 1910 Ruth was living in Carthage, Hancock County.  In that census year she was named as Ruth E. McClelland, married twice, duration of current marriage 6 years.  In 1911 Ruth's brother, Charles, died; she was named in his obituary as Mrs. Ruth McClellan of Carthage.

When Ruth's father died in November of 1915, she was named in his obituary as Mrs. Ruth Conboy of Davenport, Iowa.

In the 1920 Federal Census, she was listed as Ruth Grable and was living in Plymouth, St. Mary's Township, Hancock County.  By 1930 she had resumed using the name Conboy.  She was still in Plymouth as of 1945, when Louisa Sammons Shields died.

State of Illinois death records indicate that Ruth Conboy died in Limestone Township, Peoria County, Illinois, on November 4, 1947; this may have been at the county hospital.  We do not know where Ruth was buried.  Barely a month later Chloe Dunham Bell passed away, also in Peoria County.

The children of Ruth E. Sammons and William O. Dunham were:

i. Chloe M. Dunham, born May 25, 1890, in Hancock County.  She died December 6, 1947, in Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois, burial at Bushnell, McDonough County.

ii. Harley E. Dunham, born January 5, 1892, in Illinois, died November 14, 1926, in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois.
