An image of James' pension card.James Sammons, son of Edmund Sammons and Ann Mariah Hays, was born May 24, 1835, in Morgan County, Illinois.  The obituary of his daughter, Louisa, stated his full name as James Edmond Sammons; this is the only reference as yet found to this possible middle name.  James always spelled his surname Samons.

He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in Companies A and K of the 118th Illinois Infantry. He filed for and received (after years of wrangling) a veteran's pension.  At right is an image of the pension card.

JOETTA.
(Crowded out last week.)

It was with deep regret that the people of our community learned of the death of one of their old friends and former neighbor, James Sammons, who passed away at his residence, 130 North Normal St., Macomb, Ill., Nov. 12, 1915, aged 80 years, 5 months and 18 days.

James Sammons, son of Edward and Anna Sammons, was born in Morgan county, Ill., May 24, 1835.  On Nov. 1, 1855, he was married to Sarah Ellen Way, who departed this life Feb. 1, 1903.  To this union were born seven children, Mrs. Mary Shields of Colchester; Edmond of Joetta; Charles who passed away Sept. 29, 1911; Mrs. Ruth Conboy, of Davenport, Ia.; Mrs. Louisa Shields of near Joetta; Stephen, who died January 18, 1882, and Mrs. Ida Yetter, who reside on the old homeplace near Joetta.  On Dec. 3, 1908, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Lucy Wade, who with five children, twelve grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, deeply mourn his departure.

At the age of 12 years he came to Hancock county.  He has resided near Joetta until seven years ago when he retired from farm life and moved to Plymouth.  One year ago last March he and his wife moved to Macomb, where he purchased a beautiful home where his last days were spent.  Mr. Sammons had lived most all his life in this vicinity and was an honored and highly respected citizen. Honest and upright in all his transactions with his friends and neighbors.  Was one who was missed when he moved from the community.   Deceased was a member of the 118th Ill. regiment Co. K., enlisting in August, 1862, and was discharged in August, 1865.

He was operated on at the Marrietta Phelps hospital, Macomb, March 19, 1915, from which he never recovered and during the last eight weeks of his suffering all that 1oving hands and medical skill could do were of no avail and though his death was not unexpected it was a shock to his family, who had hoped to keep him a while longer.  He was a member of the Colchester Masonic lodge.

Funeral services were held at the old home near Joetta where his daughter, Mrs. Ida Yetter, lives, on Monday, Nov. 15, 1915, Rev. Mr. Branic of Colchester officiating.  Interment in the Willis cemetery, where the Masons concluded the services at the grave.  The floral offerings were beautiful.

In an essay about Edmund Sammons, researcher William G. Stewart included documentation on James and family.  To read this essay, visit the following linked page on Charlotte's & Raymond's Roots, hosted by Charlotte Ramsey.  Return to this page with your browser back button.
