CHARLES WILLIAM SAMMONS 1863-1911
LENA MAY PRICE 1878-1954

Thanks to Mary Jane White for contributing Sammons family data.

Charles William Sammons, son of
James Sammons and Sarah Ellen Way, was born March 20, 1863, at the Sammons home south of Joetta, Hancock County, Illinois.  He died September 29, 1911, and was buried at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Colchester, McDonough County.  The following obituary appeared in the Joetta column of the Carthage Republican published October 4, 1911.

Again the reaper of death has come and taken from our circle a kind and and [sic] devoted husband, a loving father and a pleasant neighbor.  Charles William Sammons, son of James and Sarah Sammons, was born at the old homestead near Joetta, March 20 [very dark, may not be March 20], 1863, and died Sept. 29, 1911, aged 48 years, 6 months and 9 days. Deceased was of a family of seven children; one brother, Stephen, dying in childhood; his mother also passed away several years ago. He is survived by a loving and devoted wife, two sons, Harry and Chester, an aged father, four sisters--Mrs. Mary Shields of Colchester, Mrs. Ruth McClellan, of Carthage, Mrs. Ida Yetter, Mrs. Lou Shields and one brother, Ewd., [sic] all of this vicinity.  He suffered intensely for four months with heart trouble which was borne with much patience.  The end came very unexpectedly and sudden when he peacefully fell asleep.  All that loving care and

medical skill could do was to no avail.  He was a loving husband, a most kind and indulgent father and obliging and accomodating neighbor. His happiness was complete when in his home with his loved ones around him.  Much sympathy is felt for the young wife and two fatherless little boys. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday, Oct. 1, at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. L. P. Bear, of Stronghurst.  The body was taken to Colchester for interment.

A photo of Lena May Price. FOR DISPLAY ON THIS WEBSITE ONLY.Charles married Lena May Price on May 10, 1900, at Joetta, Hancock County, Illinois.  Marriage Documents

Lena was the daughter of Benjamin G. Price and Emma B. Laur.  She was born in March of 1878 at Astoria, Illinois, and died in 1954, burial at Oakridge Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois.  While the inscription on her tombstone gives 1879 as the year of her birth, all other records indicate 1878.

The children of Charles Sammons and Lena Price were:

i. Harry W. Sammons, born October 19, 1899, in Illinois.  It is believed that Charles Sammons adopted Lena's first son.  Harry died August 5, 1957.  He and Eulah F., his wife, (October 23, 1898 - October 7, 1988) are buried next to Lena and her second husband at Oakridge Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois.

ii. Chester Sammons, born March 29, 1908, in Illinois, died January 6, 1991.  When Cornelius Falder Jr. died in 1956, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Sammons of Rockford attended the funeral in Colchester.

In June of 1912, Lena married Roscoe Winston Barb, son of Manville Lawrence Barb and Rosa Junia Beckwith.

Charles Sammons was the man whom Jesse Beckwith (Rosa Junia's brother) came so near to doing away with, because Charles once gave Jesse a beating (quite possibly deserved).
