ALEXANDER LEE CAMREN
1852-1938

 

Thanks to Jackie Wilson Smith on behalf of her niece, Jennifer Christine Dreiling, for sharing her extensive documentation on Alexander.

Alexander Lee Camren was born June 13, 1852, and raised in Hancock Township, Hancock County, Illinois, the son of Elizabeth Roberts and Elisha Cameron.  Between 1870 and 1880 the family left Hancock County, lived briefly in Nodaway County, Missouri, and then moved on to Allodium Township, Graham County, Kansas.

Alex was a bachelor farmer all of his life.

In 1897 he lost the election for road overseer of District #1 in 1897 in Allodium Township.

In 1898 he was an Allodium township delegate for the People's Party Convention held in Graham County.

He paid $4.60 personal tax in 1905 as published in the Reveille on January 25, 1906, in Graham County.

Alex prepared a will and signed it on June 21, 1926:

I, Alexander Lee Camren of Lenora in the County of Graham, State of Kansas, being of sound mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, do therefore make, ordain, publish and declare this to be my last WILL AND TESTAMENT:
FIRST, I order and direct that my Executor hereinafter named, pay all my just debts and funeral expenses as soon after my decease as conveniently may be.
SECOND, After the payment of such funeral expenses and debts, I give, devise and bequeath
FIRST, to my sister Nancy Jane Smith the sum of $200.
SECOND; To my sister Betty Manahan the sum of $200.
THIRD; To my Neice Meron Herren the sum of $200.
of $500. to be held in trust until the said Chester Lee Woodside shall become of age,at which time it shall be given him.
Fifth; To my sister Minervia A. Sines such part of the rents or income off of the South-east Quarter and the North-west Quarter of Section Twelve (12) in Township Six (6) South of Range Twenty-five (25) West of the 6 .P.P. in Graham County,Kansas as shall be necessary for her support during the remainder of her lifetime.

SIXTH;All the remainder of my estate both real and personal after the payment of the bequests above mentioned and for the support of my sister Minervia A.Simes during the remainer of her life time I hereby give,devise and bequeth to my Sister Ida Woodside.

LASTLY, I make, constitute and appoint Ida Woodside, to be Executor of this my las Will and Testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal, the 21st day of June in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred twenty-six

This instrument was on the day of the date thereof, signed, published and declared by the said testator Alexander Lee Camren, to be his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who at his request have subscribed our names thereto as witnesses in his presence and in the presence of each other.

In 1926 Alex was listed on the poll book of electors in Allodium Township.

His sister, Ida, held a party in honor of his 86th birthday in June of 1937.  They were living in Allodium Township.

Alex died March 12, 1938, in or near Lenora, Norton County, Kansas.  He was buried at Lenora South Cemetery in an unmarked grave.

In a census taken in 1895, Alex Camren was enumerated with his parents and a niece in Allodium Township, Graham County, Kansas.  Alex was listed as a white male, 42, born in Illinois, who came to Kansas from Missouri.  He was reported as married [believed to be an error].  He was a farmer.
