CALVIN S. BOOZ 1849-19__
REBECCA ELLEN ROBERTS 1852-1927

Rebecca Ellen Roberts, daughter of James Esmon Roberts and Nancy J. Shipley was born in Hancock County, Illinois, February 2, 1852.

Calvin Booz was born November 22, 1849, probably in Hancock County, the son of James Booz and Caroline Yetter.

Rebecca and Calvin were married on February 1, 1872, by Rev. Thomas M. Walker, the minister located in the Fountain Green area who, over the years, performed hundreds of marriages for local residents. Marriage Documents

In 1880 they were residents of LaHarpe Township, Hancock County, and had three little girls, Eva, Sadie and Daisy.  By 1900, their family complete - seven children all alive and thriving, they were farming in nearby Henderson County, Terre Haute Precinct.  Counted in the household that year was Ed Gosney, whom Daisy would soon marry.

Eva had married a local boy, Robert Blythe, in 1893, and they would be long-time residents of Hancock County.  In 1894 Sadie became the wife of C. Elmer Hammond from Smith County, Kansas.  They remained in Hancock County for a couple of years, then moved to Smith County.  It would be interesting to know the sequence of family events, because sometime between 1900 and 1910, Calvin, Ellen and their unmarried children also left Hancock County and relocated to Smith County.

Ellen died September 20, 1927, presumably in Kansas.  At 80, widowed, Calvin was making his home with his fourth daughter, Marguerite, and her husband in Lawrence Township, Osborne County, Kansas.  Calvin died after April 1, 1930.  Calvin and Ellen are buried at Fairview Cemetery, Osborne County, near Portis, amidst children and extended family.

The Booz children, all born in Illinois, were:

i. Eva E. Booz, born June 25, 1873, in or near Fountain Green, Hancock County, according to her obituary.  She died February 21, 1945, at her home in St. Albans Township, Hancock County, in the vicinity of Stillwell, burial at Chili Cemetery, Chili Township.

ii. Sadie Adaline Booz, born November 12, 1875.  Sadie married Charles Elmer Hammond on October 10, 1894.  Two children were born in Hancock County (in 1896 and 1897), then the Hammonds moved to Smith County, Kansas, where they farmed.  They were still located in Smith County in 1918 when Elmer registered for Selective Service.  His stated address was Portis, Smith County.

As of January 1, 1920, Elmer and Sadie were residents of Phoenix, Arizona.  Sadie died July 17, 1920.

Elmer was born October 6, 1872, in Kansas, died August 7, 1955, in Los Angeles County, California.  They share the same tombstone at Hammond Cemetery, Smith County, Kansas.

M.", a Kansas girl, and had a one-year-old daughter.  When he registered for Selective Service in 1918, he named his father as his closest relative, didn't mention a wife and reported his occupation as carnival worker.  In 1920 he was working as a nurse at the Colorado State Hospital in Pueblo, Colorado, divorced.  He died June 9, 1922, burial at Fairview Cemetery near Portis.

v. Marguerite "Maggie" Bell Booz, born January 27, 1886, died April 28, 1970, in Marion County, Oregon.  Last address on Social Security records: Salem, Marion County, Oregon.
