Otis, Forrest, Marion, Murl

Martha Murl McGee was born March 8, 1893, in Fountain Green Township, Hancock County, Illinois, in the McGee home a few miles east of Fountain Green.  She was the daughter of Henry Clay McGee and Harriet Mort.  She died September 21, 1962, burial at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Macomb, McDonough County.

Note that when Clay McGee, presumably, talked to the census taker in 1900, he named his youngest daughter as Mattie Murl.  It was during her school years that the spelling Merle or Merl first appeared, and when an initial was recorded later on, was that an M for Martha or Mattie, or was it for McGee?  She signed birthday and Christmas cards with the name Murl and that is the name on her tombstone.  Clay had lost his mother before the age of two and was raised by his mother's sister, Martha "Mattie" Pope Parker.  We tend to believe that Murl was named in honor of Martha, who took so many relatives into her home over the years, and who also probably helped Clay raise his own little ones after Harriet died.

In 1909 Murl married Otis Gipe, son of Cyrus Gipe and Mary Margaret Hyde.  Otis was born January 6, 1889, died June 28, 1952.  Otis' obituary stated he was born in McDonough County, but that does not jibe with other sources, which suggest he was born in Fulton County, Illinois.
