THOMAS BURTON YETTER 1859-1919
EMILY McGEE 1856-1940

Emily McGee, called Emma, was born in Hancock County, Illinois, September 6, 1856, one of the two daughters of James C. McGee and Rebecca M. Pope.  One census record shows Emma's middle initial as J; State of Illinois death records show T as her middle initial.  We tend to think her middle name was Jane, after her maternal grandmother.

After Rebecca died in 1861, James married her younger sister, Elretta Caroline, and together they had a son called Clay.  Elretta died in 1865.  At this point James had three motherless children under the age of ten.

Emma and Clay were taken in by Rebecca and Elretta's sister, Martha O. Pope, who was married to John H. Parker.  Emma and Clay remained in the Parker home for a number of years. Emma stayed there until she married, according to her obituary, but it appears she worked for some interval as a domestic in the home of John H. Tyler.  She was counted as a member of that household in 1880.

An enhanced newspaper photo of Thomas B. Yetter.Thomas Burton Yetter was born May 24, 1859, in Fountain Green Township, Hancock County, to Lewis Yetter and Martha E. Wright.

Emma and Thomas were married March 25, 1884, at Fountain Green village by the Rev. Thomas M. Walker.  Witnesses to the marriage were C. S. Tyler and Linnie Willey.  Marriage documents

Thomas died June 30, 1919, in Fountain Green Township.  Emma died June 13, 1940, at Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois.  They were interred at Bushnell, McDonough County, Illinois.  Obituaries

They were the parents of two children:

i. Lewis Earl Yetter, born February 10, 1885, in Earlton, Kansas.  He died December 14, 1966, at LaHarpe, Hancock County.  Burial at Friendship Cemetery, McDonough County.

ii. Martha Blanche Yetter, born October 18, 1886, in Illinois, probably Fountain Green Township, Hancock County.  She died November 11, 1980, at Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois, and was buried at Friendship Cemetery.

Blanche was a strong willed woman who had an opinion about everything, political parties in particular, and didn't hesitate to forcefully share those opinions.  She also had a quick wit and enjoyed a good story.  We do not know if Earl and Blanche lived together continuously after Emma's death, but he was living with her in his later years.  Allegedly, Earl considered marriage once or twice, but Blanche managed to dissuade the chosen ladies.

One of the possessions she enjoyed passing on to a very young cousin was a child's drop leaf tea table, built and presented to Blanche by Thomas J. Lincoln.

A Fountain Green War Cloud

On March 16 Thomas B. Yetter, of Fountain Green, traded his store building, stock of merchandise and residence to W. A. Robinson, of Iowa, for a farm in Monroe County, Missouri.
It was a $12,000 or $13,000 deal.  As stated, Mr. Robinson was given possession of the store on the 18th of March, and commenced selling goods.  Mr. Yetter rented the Missouri land for the coming year.  On last Friday morning Mr. Yetter went to the store in Fountain Green and found it locked and a board nailed across the door.  He pulled the board off, unlocked the door with a key he had retained and opened up the store for business.  Mr. Robinson appeared on the scene and also took possession, and now both parties are camped in the store claiming ownership and possession, and trouble is in sight.  In the meantime Robinson has employed Berry, McCory & Kelley, and Yetter has engaged Judge Mack, to look after their respective interests in the matter.

The Republican knows nothing of the merits of the case or the reasons for existing conditions.  The matter will doubtless be amicably adjusted.
