Cyrena Alice McGee was born in 1858 in Hancock County, Illinois.  She was the younger of two daughters born to James C. McGee and Rebecca M. Pope.

Rebecca Pope McGee died in 1861.  A few months later, James married her younger sister, Elretta Caroline, and together they had one son, Clay, born in 1863.  Elretta died in 1865, leaving James with three children under the age of ten.

Alice's full sister, Emma, and Clay, just a toddler, went to live with Rebecca and Elretta's sister, Martha O. Pope, wife of John H. Parker.  These two McGee siblings were raised in the Parker home.  Given Alice's tender age at the time of Elretta's death, it's very possible that she, too, lived in the Parker home for at least some period of time.

In 1870 Alice was living with her father and his third wife, Frances A. (Long) Grigsly.

John H. Burford was the son of Wyatt S. Burford and Priscilla M. Driskell.  He was born in 1854 in Illinois, apparently in St. Mary's Township, Hancock County.

On November 17, 1877, John applied for a marriage license for himself and Miss Alice McGee. He stated that he was 23 and that Alice was 18.  They were both living in Tennessee, Illinois, at the time.  They were married on November 20th at the home of John's father.  Marriage License

John and Alice were both buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Colchester, McDonough County.  He died September 11, 1934, in Macomb, McDonough County.  Alice, too, died in Macomb, on May 9, 1946, according to the State of Illinois online database of death certificates, but 1945 is the year of death inscribed on her tombstone.

They were the parents of three children, probably all born in Tennessee Township, McDonough County:

i. Mabel C. Burford, apparently a twin to Maude, born about 1884.

ii. Maude Burford, apparently a twin to Mabel, born about 1884.  She married Edward D. Roe about 1911.  They had no children.

Census records tend to support 1888.  He died March 19, 1923, at Colchester and was buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery.
