HARVEY MONROE RINEHART 1873-1945
DORA H. SHIFLEY 1871-1943

A portrait of Harvey and Dora, perhaps their wedding portrait. FOR DISPLAY ON THIS WEBSITE ONLY.

Harvey Monroe Rinehart was born June 25, 1873, in Pennsylvania, probably Clay Township, Huntingdon County, to Jacob and Irene Rinehart, both natives of Pennsylvania.  A couple of years before Harvey was born, his uncle, John Rinehart left Clay Township and headed west, settling in Hancock County, Illinois.  Perhaps it was this connection that prompted Harvey to seek his fortune in Illinois.

Dora H. Shifley was born in 1871, probably in Tennessee Township, McDonough County, Illinois, the daughter of Christian Gottleib Scheifley and Caroline Augusta Holoch.

Harvey and Dora married circa 1900-01 and initially lived in Blandinsville Township, McDonough County, where Harvey farmed.  By September of 1918 when Harvey registered for Selective Service, they had relocated to Knoxville, Knox County, Illinois, and Harvey was a veterinary surgeon. They remained in Knoxville at least through the time of the 1930 Federal Census.

Dora died December 1, 1943, in Knox County, and was buried at Knoxville Cemetery.

Harvey married, second, Iva M. (Long) Rinehart (1887-1966), daughter of James Adolphas Long and Joeanna Morrow.  Iva was the widow of Lyman Hayes Rinehart (1876-1941), Harvey's first cousin, son of the above mentioned John Rinehart.

Harvey died September 18, 1945, at Macomb, McDonough County, and was buried at Knoxville next to Dora.

The Rinehart children were:

i. Sherman L. Rinehart, born February 27, 1902.  In 1930 Sherman was in Ryegate, Golden Valley, Montana.  He was single, working on a farm.  When his stepmother died in September of 1966, Sherman was said to be living in Wisconsin.  He died the following month, last known address according to Social Security records: Merrill, Lincoln County, Wisconsin.

ii. Clarence Rinehart, born about 1904.  In 1930 Clarence was newly married to Monica (born June 1, 1911, in Illinois, maiden name undetermined); they were living in Galesburg.  In 1966 Clarence was reported to be a resident of Denver, Colorado.  Monica Rinehart died in Colorado in February of 1972.

iii. Dorathy H. Rinehart, born April 1, 1907.  She married Ralph Van Huffel.  In 1966 they were residing in Victoria, Knox County.  Dorathy died in January of 1968.  Ralph was born January 21, 1909, in Illinois, the son of Joseph E. and Ida Van Huffel.  Ralph died in March of 1979, last known address according to Social Security records: Victoria.
