JOHN GOLDSBERRY
SOPHIA EBERT ca. 1845-1930

John Goldsberry was born between 1825 and 1831 in Ohio.  Throughout his working life he was a coal miner.  He was first married to Susanah or Susan A. (maiden name undetermined.)  She apparently died between June 1870 and January 1871, probably in Tennessee Township, McDonough County, Illinois.

John and Susan's children, all born in Illinois, perhaps McDonough County, were:

i. James Goldsberry, born about 1852.

ii. Malinda Goldsberry, born about 1856.

iii. Amanda Goldsberry, born about 1857.

iv. Dora Goldsberry, born about 1859.

v. George W. Goldsberry, born about 1862.

vi. Joseph Goldsberry, born about 1865.

Sophia Ebert, daughter of Philip Ebert and Mary A. Slaybaugh, was born about 1845 in Pennsylvania.  In 1840 the Ebert family was located in Dickinson Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; perhaps Sophia was born there.  In the late 1840s the Ebert family left Pennsylvania and settled in Hancock Township, Hancock County, Illinois, where Philip farmed.

Sophia was not enumerated in the family home in 1870; we have not found her elsewhere in that year's census.

On January 17, 1871, James C. Vest signed an affidavit which stated that John Goldsberry was over the age of 21 and that Miss Sophia Ebbert was over the age of 18.  McDonough County marriage license #4139 was issued the same day.  The couple was married on the 19th by John A. Stookey, Justice of the Peace. Marriage Documents

They made their home in Colchester for a number of years and became the parents of one child, Frank.

John Goldsberry apparently died between 1900 and 1910, burial location undetermined.

Sophia was counted in Frank's home in Abingdon, Knox County, in 1910.  Frank moved away from the area and Sophia remained in Abingdon; she was listed as a servant in 1920.  By 1930 she had again gone to live with Frank; at that time they were in Lombard, DuPage County, Illinois.  Sophia died there on June 28, 1930.  We do not know where she was buried.

The son of Sophia Ebert and John Goldsberry was:

i. Frank Goldsberry, born about 1872, probably in McDonough County, Illinois.  He married Mary Woodworth about August 4, 1898, in McDonough County.  Mary was the daughter of John Q. A. Woodworth and Catharine Robertson.

Both Frank and Mary died after April 1, 1930.
