Walter J. Eddington was born in Somerset, England, in 1869 and came to the United States with his parents, John and Harriett Eddington.  He told his granddaughter, Dorothy Eddington, that even though he was just 4 years old, he still remembered and would never forget seeing the Statue of Liberty when they sailed into the harbor.  In 1880 the family was settled in Chalmers Township, McDonough County, Illinois.

Elizabeth M. Gordon, known as Lizzie, was the daughter of Robert Gordon and Harriet Baggley. Lizzie was born February 14, 1875, in Chalmers Township.  In the 1880 Federal Census, she was listed at Martha E., but in later records she is found as Elizabeth M.

On February 26, 1894, Walter and Lizzie were married at her father's home in Colchester Township.  Marriage Documents

The newlyweds set about raising crops and children in McDonough County, renting in at least three different townships until they could save enough to buy their own land.  By 1920 they had purchased a farm in Emmet Township.

Walter died November 22, 1944, in Macomb, McDonough County.  Lizzie almost made it to the century mark; she died in October of 1973.  They are buried at Camp Creek Cemetery near Macomb.

The Eddington children were:

i. Della H. Eddington, born in 1894, died in 1950.  She married Herbert M. Grove, 1873-1947, son of William H. Grove Sr. and Mary E. Jacob.  Della and Herbert are buried at LaHarpe City Cemetery, LaHarpe, Hancock County, Illinois.

ii. Le Roy Preston Eddington, June 28, 1896 - November 16, 1970, married Leta May Bowen (1896-1964) in February of 1917, daughter of Kinzy Hill Bowen and Anna M. Finch.  Roy and Leta are buried at LaHarpe Township Cemetery, LaHarpe.  Roy and Leta farmed just north of Fountain Green in Hancock County for a number of years.
