| McDONOUGH COUNTY, ILLINOIS FAMILIES NEWS MEMORABILIA |
Continental Historical Co., Springfield, Illinois Newton Eakle, lives on section 31, on 80 acres of his father's farm, which is nice rolling land, and engaged in stock raising as a specialty, having some fine Durham stock, and good horses[.] This farm is familiarly known as part of the old "Prentiss place," being one of the first settled upon in this part of the country. It is fenced in small fields, affording advantage for feed of great worth. Mr. Eakle was born in Ross county, Ohio, November 13, 1842, and is a son of John B., and Mary A. (Hire) Eakle. His home was with his parents until his marriage, which occurred November 19, 1868, in Tennessee township to Lide E. Anderson, a daughter of William Anderson, now in Macomb. Since their marriage they have always lived on the same farm, believing that "a rolling stone gathers no moss." Three children have blessed the union of these people--Nellie M., born November 12, 1869; Harry, born July 1, 1871; Myrtle Lou, born September 30, 1875.
Mr. Eakle read his evening paper as usual last night and going out on the porch remarked that the barn door was open and that he thought he had better close it. As he started for the barn he asked his wife if she wanted any kindling. She stated that she did and paid no more attention to the matter until about fifteen minutes later she called her son, Harry, who was lying on a couch and told him that he had better look after his father, as he had been gone quite awhile. Harry Eakle went to the barn and looked into the kindling shed but did not see him. As he turned to leave the shed he glanced into the small runway where the hay is thrown down. His father was hanging to the verticle ladder by a quarter inch rope, one end of which was looped around a step and the other end around his neck. His feet were dragging the floor. The son rushed to his father and supporting his weight with one arm, broke the rope. His father sank to the floor. Earl Dorthey, a neighbor, working in his garden heard Harry Eakle call to his mother that his father had hung himself and came over to the Eakle barn. He went then to a telephone and called Dr. J. B. Holmes, who pronounced Mr. Eakle dead when he arrived. At the inquest conducted this morning by Coroner Samuel Russler both the son, Harry Eakle, and the son-in-law, Lafe Simpson, stated that they had heard Mr. Eakle often wish he was out of the way, and threaten to take his own life. He had been carefully watched for the past two years as he had been suffering from a nervous breakdown and his threats were frequent. The coroner's jury consisting of F. W. Harris, foreman, John A. Miner, C. E. Ogden, Frank E. Bonham, Harry Dougherty and O. J. Neece, gave a suicide verdict. Newton Eakle was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Eakle and was born in Ohio Nov. 13, 1842. He came to this county about fifty years ago and settled in Hire township where he lived for half a century. Last February he came to Macomb. Fifty years ago last November 19th he was married to Miss Lyde Anderson, who survives with three children. They are Mrs. Maud Simpson, Mrs. Myrtle White and Harry Eakle, all of Macomb. Three brothers, Milton Eakle and Harvey Eakle of Hire township, and Frank Eakle of Tennessee and two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Humphrey of Macomb and Mrs. Carrie Head of Grand Rapids, Mich., also survive. Funeral services will be held at the late residence 452 North Madison street, tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. F. M. Branic officiating. Interment will be made in Oakwood cemetery.
