HANCOCK COUNTY, ILLINOIS
JOSEPH D. WISE
May 30, 1858
Mar. 26, 1889
|Joseph D. Wise, born May 30, 1858, had been married for a bit over three years when he died on March 26, 1889. The son of Abraham Wise and Mary Jane Dugan, originally from Ohio, Joseph was the eighth child and the only one born in Indiana.
The Wise family had migrated from Tuscarawas County, Ohio (in 1850), to Owen County, Indiana, where Joseph was born, to Richland (1860) and Clay Counties in southeastern Illinois, then to Hancock County, Illinois (1870). In 1880 they were in Fountain Green Township, Hancock County.
Joseph married Olive D. Hainline on January 20, 1886. Rev. George W. Ross performed the marriage. Marriage Documents
We don't know whether they began their married life in Hancock or McDonough County (near Olive's people). Regardless, their time together was cut short. According to the obituary of Joseph's sister, Kittie, Joseph died from consumption, as had their father, two months previous, and Kittie, seven months later. They were all buried at Majorville Cemetery.
In 1900 Olive was living back home with her parents, James MacArthur Hainline and the former Sarah B. Willeford, in Hire Township, McDonough County. The census record of that year holds a curious entry for Olive, showing her as single and with her maiden name. She reportedly died some years later, but efforts to locate her in the intervening years have been unsuccessful. As we can best determine, she and Joseph had no children.
