HANCOCK COUNTY, ILLINOIS
Carthage, Illinois - April 1908
Transcribed and contributed by Cora R. Swift
Fountain Green--Once again, it is our sad duty to pen a few lines in memory of one of our old and respected citizens.
Nancy Pennington was born in Schuyler county, Illinois, 27th December 1838, grew to young womanhood and in 1855 was married to Thomas Seward. To this union were born two children of whom one survives, Mr. Seldon Seward, of this place. This happy couple were not destined to go through life together for in 1859 [sic] the young husband was called to the Great Beyond. She was again married in 1864 to Robert A. Thrush. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Lillie Long, who departed this life several years ago. Although deceased has been in poor health, both mentally and physically for some time, it was not thought by her friends that the end was so near. Tuesday, 01 March, she suffered a stroke of apoplexy but lived until Sunday, 5th April, when she passed away peacefully as if asleep at her home, aged sixty-nine years. Mrs. Thrush united with the Methodist church in 1873, and has ever tried to live and be a true christian. In her own home her chair by the fireside is vacant and it's there she will be most sadly missed, but friends and neighbors will miss her pleasant smile and cheerful face also and while we are loathe to give her up, yet we could not wish her back to this world of care and pain. Besides her son she leaves to mourn her departure, three grand children viz: Grace, Frank and Martha Seward, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church, Tuesday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Carr. Burial in Majorville cemetery. A choir composed of Messrs. Rings, Stewart, Duffie, Miss Grace Geddes, Mrs. Gertrude Brown, Mrs. Myrtle Barbe, organist, sang some of her favorite songs.
|Nancy Pennington was the daughter of Riley and Rhoda Pennington, both of whom were from Kentucky. As of 1850 the family was living in Oregon Township, Schuyler County, Illinois.
Thomas Seward was born in Illinois about 1837 to Lester and Cassy Seward, from New York and Iowa, respectively. They, too, were also residing in Oregon Township, Schuyler County, in 1850.
Thomas Seward cannot have died in 1859, as reported in Nancy's obituary, because he and Nancy were counted in the 1860 Federal Census in Linn County, Kansas.
Back in Illinois, Nancy married Robert A. Thrush in Schuyler County on December 11, 1864.
Their daughter was:
In 1870 the Thrushes were living in Hancock Township, Hancock County, Illinois. In 1880 they were in Fountain Green Township.
Nancy was reported as a widow in the 1900 census; she was living with her son at that time.
