ELIZABETH ANN ROBERTS SWEET (nee SHERROD)
1855-1915

ELIZABETH A. SWEET
OCT. 13, 1855.
APR. 12, 1915.

Early information on Elizabeth Sherrod is from the research of
Keitha M. Roberts Statler, granddaughter of William K. and Elizabeth Roberts.
Keitha's records are part of the Ina White Westfall collection, shared by Mary Jane White.

Elizabeth Ann Sherrod was born in Cedar Township, Mahaska County, Iowa, on October 13, 1855, to Thomas B. and Martha E. Sherrod, from Tennessee and Illinois, respectively.  In July of 1863 Thomas was included in Civil War Draft Registrations in Cedar Township.  Martha apparently died sometime between that registration and April 23, 1866, when Thomas married Margaret V. Walker in Lewis County, Missouri.  In 1870 the Sherrods were counted in Township 62 Range 9, Lewis County.

Elizabeth was first married in Lewis County on June 4, 1872, to William Kice Roberts.  He was born about 1851 in Indiana, perhaps in Hendricks County, the son of James S. Roberts of Virginia, and Mary Ann Walls of Indiana.

In 1880 Elizabeth and William were living in Reddish Township, Lewis County, with two children, Arthur A. and Rosa E.  Four more children were born between approximately 1880 and 1888: Grace, Bessie, Maggie and Oscar.

Elizabeth and William were divorced in 1890.  (William died October 3, 1910, in Highland Township, Lewis County, and was buried at East Midway Cemetery, Lewis County.)  She married Charles Sweet on October 9, 1892, in Lewis County and shortly thereafter they came to Hancock County, Illinois, where they lived for a time in Fountain Green Township.

Charles Sweet was born about 1865 in Illinois to Cyrus and Deborah E. (Whittemon) Sweet.  In 1870 and 1880, the Sweet family was living in Concord Township, Bureau County, Illinois.

Elizabeth and Charles became the parents of Golda A. and Ruby E. Sweet.

Elizabeth died April 12, 1915, and was buried at Majorville Cemetery, Hancock County, Illinois.

The children of Elizabeth and William K. Roberts were all born in Missouri, probably Reddish Township, Lewis County.  They were:

i. Arthur Augustus Roberts, born March 30, 1873.  He died September 27, 1934, at Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois, burial at Moss Ridge Cemetery, Carthage.  He married Lettie McCants.

ii. Rosa E. Roberts, born in 1877.  She died in 1961, burial at Majorville Cemetery.

iii. Grace Roberts, born about 1880.

iv. Bessie M. Roberts, born June 29, 1883, died February 10, 1929, interment at Majorville Cemetery.

v. Maggie May Roberts, born November 1, 1885.

vi. Oscar E. Roberts, born April 25, 1888.  He died in January of 1967.
