SELDON SEWARD
1858-1934

EDNA WILLIAMS SEWARD
1863-1952

Author - Marcia Farina

Seldon T. Seward was born in Kansas, the son of Thomas Seward and Nancy Pennington.  Even though a birth year of 1858 was inscribed on his tombstone, most evidence points to a later year.
- He was not counted with his parents in 1860.  This by itself is not hard proof.  One simple explanation could be that his name was dropped when the enumerator recopied pages.  But the absence of his name in 1860 must be considered along with other records.  Using November as his birth month:
- 1870 census, enumerated in June, age at last birthday - 9; born in 1860
- 1880 census, enumerated in June, age at last birthday - 18; born in 1861
- When he married in early 1888, he reported he would be 26 on his next birthday; born in 1862.
- 1900 census, enumerated in June, reported birth November 1862, age at last birthday - 37
- 1910 census, enumerated in April, age at last birthday 50; born in 1859.
- 1920 census, enumerated in January, age at last birthday - 62; born in 1857.
- 1930 census, enumerated in April, age at last birthday - 72; born in 1857.

Seldon married Edna A. Williams on February 16, 1888, at Carthage, Hancock County, Illinois. Witnesses to the marriage were O. F. Berry and Mrs. L. A. Cutler.  Marriage Documents

Edna Williams was born February 17, 1863, in Hancock County, probably in Hancock Township. Her parents were James Williams and Martha Owings, originally from Kentucky and Indiana, respectively.

Seldon died April 10, 1934, in Fountain Green Township.  Edna died December 5, 1952, in McDonough County, near Macomb.  They are both buried at Majorville Cemetery, Hancock County, Illinois.

The children of Seldon Seward and Edna Williams were:

i. Frank H. Seward, born November 24, 1888, probably in Fountain Green Township, Hancock County.

In 1915 Frank married Ruth L. Lutyens of Tampico, Whiteside County, Illinois, born about 1890, daughter of George H. Lutyens and Carrie M. Breckenridge.  Frank later married Esther Swanson.

In 1917 Frank signed up for Selective Service.  He was 28, married, working as a laborer for Charles Haigh at RR3, LaHarpe.  His home address was Fountain Green.  The registrar described him as being of medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair.

Frank died in May of 1968, probably in or near Rock Falls, Whiteside County, and was buried at Oak Knoll Cemetery, north of Sterling in Whiteside County.  Linked from the Oak Knoll page, presented by Illinois Genealogy Trails, is an news article regarding the grocery store that Frank owned and operated for a number of years.  Return to this page with your browser back indicator.
