The marker on the left shows John died July 24, 1864; paper records indicate he died on June 24.

The tombstone also indicates he died and was buried at Allatoona (spelled Alatoona on the marker), Georgia, which is in Bartow County, Georgia.  Paper records report that he died in Rome, Georgia, which is in Floyd County, west and adjacent to Bartow County.

Records for Marietta National Cemetery, Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia, indicate he was buried at Allatoona, then moved to Marietta.

Decator April 29
Dear Brother
I take this oportunity of writing to you to let you know we are all well and hope this will find you all well     we have marching orders  I guess we will leave the first which will be day after tomorow   I do not no where we will go    Their is a man in here in the 43 Ohio by the name of Budd     I am going to hunt him up tomorow   he may be some of our relation

I want you to find out what regiment our folks are in and let me know   May be I can find some   Spence you get that dolar that John Denison ows me and you and Warren get your pictures and send them to me   bub must get Spun broke and ride her this sumer when you go to see them little squirts

I guess I will close for now
