Emma Pearl Callihan Oakman, named as Emiline and Emeline in early census records, was the daughter of John Callihan and Elizabeth Long.

The records seem to tell the story of a close relationship between Emma and her elder sister, Ann.  Perhaps Emma moved in with Ann and her young son, William, after the death of Ann's first husband, Mahlon Frank, in 1874.  About a year and a half later, Ann lost the son she was carrying when Mahlon died.  We might speculate that Emma and John W. Day (son of Emma's and Ann's sister, Mary Callihan Day) helped Ann keep home and hearth together until Ann remarried.

Emma was married on November 13, 1894, at the home of George Cuba, Ann's second husband.  That home was described in a 1903 news item as a 'beautiful home near Vishnu Springs'.  John Wesley Oakman was the groom.

John Wesley Oakman - 1889

McDonough County marriage license was issued on November 12 to J. W. Oakman and Emma "Calahan", both of Tennessee Township.  From the accompanying Board of Health document: he was a carpenter, born in Pennsylvania to Ebenezer Oakman and Ann Bruce.  It was his second marriage, Emma's first.  She gave her place of residence as Vishnu Springs.  George and Ann also served as witnesses to the marriage.

Emma died at Ann's home in 1912.  She was buried at Majorville Cemetery near her parents and other family members.
