CHARLES A.
SON OF
T. J. & M. J.
LINCOLN
DIED
MAR. 8, 1866

From The Early Lincolns of Hancock County: "Thomas Jefferson is buried in the Majorville Cemetery.  No stone marks his grave."

It must be noted, however, that this work also reported that Thomas' sister, Emily, was buried at Majorville, yet Emily is believed to have been buried at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Tennessee Township, McDonough County; her tombstone is there.

Thomas Jefferson Lincoln, son of James Lincoln and Frances Day, was born Apr. 29, 1823, in Grayson County, Kentucky.  He died April 26, 1914, in Fountain Green, Hancock County, Illinois. Obituary

Thomas married Martha Jane Burress in 1855, in Hancock County, Illinois.
Marriage License

Martha Jane Burress was born October 4, 1833 (calculated from the tombstone inscription), in Kentucky or Indiana.  She died October 21, 1874, probably in Hancock County.  We may have located her family in Indiana in 1850, but we have no firm evidence.  Although the name "Bures" appears on her marriage license, searching through census and other records led to the conclusion that the more likely spelling was Burress or Buress.

The Lincoln children were probably all born in Hancock County, Illinois.  Those who died at an early age probably also died in Hancock County:

i. Harriett "Hattie" E. Lincoln, born May 16, 1856*.  She died July 24, 1907, in Clinton, Henry County, Missouri, and was buried at Englewood Cemetery in Clinton Township.

ii. Emily (Emma) Lincoln, born about 1857.  She died May 23, 1942, and was buried in Webster Cemetery, Webster, Hancock County, Illinois.

iii. Jane Lincoln, listed in the 1860 Federal Census at the age of 1.  There is no further evidence of this child, and notably missing from the 1860 listing were Robert and Thomas.  We must therefore speculate on the accuracy of this entry and the birth dates of both Robert and Thomas.  Inconsistencies like these are frustrating, but not particularly rare!

iv. Robert Lincoln was born April 5, 1860, if the age at death inscribed on his tombstone is accurate.  If that's the case, then he should have been counted in the 1860 Federal Census - but he was not.  Robert died December 17, 1874, burial at Majorville Cemetery.

v. Thomas "Tad" Levy Lincoln, was born November 22, 1859, according to the date provided by his son on Thomas' death certificate.  He, too, was not included in the family's 1860 census listing.  Subsequent censuses suggest he was born in 1860 or later.  He died April 11, 1939, in Kansas City, Missouri, burial at Englewood Cemetery, Clinton Township, Henry County, Missouri.

vi. Charles A. Lincoln, born after June 1, 1860 - based on the questionable census of that year; died March 8, 1866.  Burial at Majorville Cemetery.

vii. Mary E. Lincoln, born about 1868; died after April 26, 1914, burial location unknown.  In an 1892 news item she was named as Mrs. Mollie Kyser, of Clinton, Missouri.  In her father's obituary, she was named as Mrs. Mollie Kaiser of Colorado.
